Hello

New to the Forums. Its made fascinating reading though. You guys are an absolute fount of knowledge.

Would love your opinions on this. I ordered a Pretzel to go with my George Nelson Home Desk in my bedroom / study (couldn't resist).

Am looking for a lounge chair to go with it.

Been thinking about the Bertoia Diamond just cos I love the way it looks. On that score, I am totally torn between having it in Chrome with a seat pad as it was originally designed, or having it fully upholstered.

Am wondering if anyone has any other suggestions. Am quite new to these stuff. I suspect half my knowledge on contemporary design classics came from this forum ...

Thanks again.

There's so many good choices;
- The Arne Jacobsen Swan chair or Egg chair
- The Eames Lounge chair
- The Bertoia large Diamond chair
- The Saarinen Womb chair
- The Saarinen Grasshopper chair
(only available from Modernica)
- The Platner chair
any of them would look beautiful and be perfect chairs to live with.

Antony Chair: Jean Prouvé
Not sure how you feel about mixing woods but this would look great in a study IMHO

Great suggestions all but ...
Thanks for the suggestions! I should probably have mentioned that I don't have a huge amount of space: an empty area of about 1500x2000 between the bed and the window.
Have thought about your suggestions:
- Arne Jacobsen Swan chair or Egg chair
totally ruined by McDonalds and Foxtons in the UK, they have cheap immitations everywhere!
- The Eames Lounge chair
tempted cos it comes in Santos Palisandes but thought was a bit too bulky. EA124/125 considered as an altearnative, but its really shiny!
- The Bertoia large Diamond chair
is it just me or does anyone find that this looks like one big human lip regardless of colour!
Barrympls (or anyone else)- what do you think of the normal diamond - covered or seatpad (been sitting on the decision for days).
- The Saarinen Womb chair
seems like I'm the only one that finds it uncomfortable ...
- The Saarinen Grasshopper chair
(only available from Modernica)
saw a vintage one for sale at a shop near home ... doesn't appeal some how.
- The Platner chair
not sure about this at all. definitely prefer the bertoia diamond (normal size)
- Bird Chair
Love it ... but like some of you, I find it extremely low and therefore difficult to haul myself out of!
- Antony Chair: Jean Prouvé
Nice but for the mix wood part.
I do love Prouvé though.
What do you guys think of the Cité:

The concern here being my bedroom starts looking like a Vitra showroom 😀

I am assuming you mean the Ge...
I am assuming you mean the George Nelson Pretzel. Is that even available anymore? Did you buy vintage?
A Mulhauser lounge chair would look nice, with the woods complimenting each other.

Pretzel - which Pretzel?
The US Ebay seems to have a far greater wealth of 2nd hand / vintage items for sale.
The 2nd hand market in the UK seems utterly rubbish by comparison, largely dominated by rip-offs.
I didn't go vintage I'm afraid. I went for limited edition:

Hmm .. not sure about the cushions on the Mulhauser you linked ... leather and those big buttons, terribly brit "gentleman's club".

I like Prouvé too 🙂
I was looking at the Cite Armchair recently its a great looking chair! I like the black / black with tan straps
Unfortunately my local dealer only carries a small stock so I wasnt able to try it out, ( I went for the Womb chair in the end)
How about the Worker chair, from Vitra i'm afraid! or perhaps the Utrecht from Cassina?

Jean Prouvé et al
The Cité is nice, although those tan leather belt arm-rests are not so much arm-rests as they are arm slings!
As with all Jean Prouvé designs, I love its very industrial / structural look. To my mind, its a very masculine chair (opposite of the Womb chair?)!
By that same token however, its not as comfortable as I'd like it to be.
The Cité being less common-place than many of the others (Bird Chair, Womb Chair, Eames Lounge etc) is also a big plus.
I have this suspicion I have to compromise somewhere ...
Wondering what people here think of PK20 (POUL KJAERHOLM), LC4 and MR Chaise (Mies).

Paulistano
I've always liked the Paulistano, in Cognac.

Ha!
Don't like the Mulhauser eh? Well you know it is thought by some that he may be partially responsible for your Pretzel chair. He also designed the Coconut chair for Nelson and Associates.
The chair I listed was by Plycraft, who employed him later. Plycraft also had a chair very similar to the Pretzel, perhaps designed in part by Mulhauser ... thought all credit goes to Cherner.

Cherner v New and Improved Pretzel
Indeed. In the UK its called the "Cherner" Looks a bit like the Pretzel, only with the "Alien" head look-alike backrest. Retails at £900 ish each.
I actually prefer the Pretzel for its simplicity.
Was having a chat with some guys that worked at the Vitra factory and they said that the new Pretzel has none of the fragility issues the old one had: they stress-tested the re-issue models at some German facility of theirs before releasing the 1000.
oh .. and that coconut chair ---- thats one chair i really don't get ... does nothing for me at all!

Pretzel
Hrrmm...If you were American I'd make a joke about Joe Columbo's Baseball Glove chair to go with your Pretzel...
Pretzel is very elegant and tapered with the swooping arms. You'd want something, I presume, to either echo that or to totally contrast it.
I prefer the more organic shapes of the Eames Lounge and the Womb Chair, but you've already ruled them out. Perhaps something such as Bruno Mathsson chair, or an Aalto webbed chair. The webbing gets better and better with age!
A stunning contrast might be one of Mies' MR Lounges - perhaps not the adjustable one, if you have space issues. You'll be pairing bright chrome against the natural walnut - but you can tie in with leather colors and the fluid shapes of both pieces.
I second Barry in the Egg Chair - McDonalds be dammed! Hopefully someone with the taste to buy the Pretzel avoids that caloric hell-hole anyway 🙂

Do Remember
That some of the McDonalds chairs ARE Fritz Hansen..
not that that makes it any easier to bear ..........
All of the Foxtons offices have 100% genuine Fritz Hansen chairs..they can afford it 😉

MR Lounge, Womb or Egg???
Hmm LuciferSum.
Does the Bertoia Diamond count as "Organic"?
I love the MR Lounge. A pity its on the very expansive end of the scale. By matching leathers I assume you mean some shade of brown or other. Possibly a red?
The Womb chair is actually back on the shortlist. I discovered that they released 2 smaller ones (85% / 75%) this year. So the chair could actually fit in the corner I have for it!
Problem is, I'd probably be one of the first to order the smaller version in the UK and therefore won't actually find one to sit in first! Not that I'm a particularly big person ...
My issue with the Eames Lounge Chair (another) is the fact that its about half the price if its made by Herman Miller instead of Vitra! Evil!
Alto Web chair ... pity about the beech wood bit. Everything else in my room is dark-ish wood / steel.
I think I am that much closer to finding "the chair"
Gotta love this forum.
