Plyboo is very nice stuff
I checked it out when I was researching my kitchen cabinet redo. Ultimately the project went on hold for a bit, but not due to the product. It's not easily available on the east coast, but the folks at Plyboo sent me some nice samples and I had a 1/2 sheet of ply sent so I could test out some finishes. The stuff would make excellent shelving. They make veeneering too, so you could create shelves using something like IKEA 'Lack' shelves and reapply the veneering. Where did your friend get their flooring? I am researching into ebonized bamboo flooring and have not found quite what I want yet.
If a quasi rattan look were permissible...
I've become kind of intrigued with Heywood-Wakefield's 40's vintage Ashcraft line. World War II brought American access to imported rattan furniture to a sudden stop. Apparently as part of the war effort, Heywood-Wakefield made a line called Ashcraft that used domestic materials (the blonde woods they are noted for) turned and finished to resemble rattan. Presently, Ashcraft seems the least collectible in the HW retro craze, so the prices are quite cheap and supply is not scarce as hen's teeth. I believe HW made full line of this stuff. Not surprisingly, the quality is quite high, as is the functionality. I picked up a pair of stepped end tables recently for $10 that had been setting around in the thrift store for ages. The table tops look typically HW. The legs and supports look rattan style. IMHO, a great buy for a tasteful retro subtropical/plantation look, if one liked that sort of thing.
Iola Design/Bamboo Shelving
We just purchased some bamboo shelving from Iola Design. The shelving units are gorgeous. They also have really interesting free standing units...
