I understand Patrick & Alix's intent to not promote those knockoff websites, and they remove them if they are mentioned, but on the other hand, there's a few threads about certain websites that forum members have created to alert and discuss the problems they've had with quality and customer service. I think people have discussed Mojo Interiors a lot before, due to they're lousy service.
So, I have mixed feelings about letting people know where to buy items cheaper than regular legit dealers.
I'm sure that the Fritz Hansen's, Herman Miller's, Knoll's and other fine makers of modern furniture don't want us raving about eBay or other venues that sell their designs used, either. I'm sure that Hansen, Knoll, Miller and others want you to buy it NEW from one of their dealers, not used!
We've discussed the goods and the bads about knockoffs here time and time again, and again, my feeling is "do it only when necessary".
It IS funny, though, that the knockoff manufacturing companies are apprently only knocking off designs that currently available by the legal companies. (If I was a Chinese factory, I'd get my hands on a bunch of discontinued collectable modern classics and knock THEM off, which might make the legal companies put those classics BACK into production!
While I see Patrick and Alix's point (as well as many of the forum members), in the case of extremely expensive luxury stuff (like Fritz Hansen), I think that there's a bit more of an argument for people like me without scads of ready cash to want to know where to buy (like a piece like a Poul Kjaerholm sofa).
For the record, I only have a few knockoff pieces in my house; 5 Nelson clocks (out of 35) and an ebonized Nelson bench that I'm using for a coffee table. (The Nelson is not currently being made in the ebonized finish by either vitra or Herman Miller).
So, in my case, only 6 knockoff pieces.
On one hand, I wish DesignAddict would allow the free discussion of the goods and bads of knockoffs, including mentioning where to get them, and comparing the quality vs. the originals, etc., but on the other hand, I understand that Patrick & Alix want this forum to stay legal and as pure as possible.
I wonder what'll happen once some of these designs go completely out of legal copyright.....especially in Europe. (like music is apparently going to)
