This table will be placed next to a sofa and needs to provide enough light for reading and also be dimmable for a sultrier effect. What's a good choice for the dimensions and style of the table and these types of needs?

Tolomeo, I'm not sure if it's...
Tolomeo, I'm not sure if it's dimmable but perhaps you could get that fitted. I think they're great and would be a good contrast to the table.
Looks like a few more models than I knew about are being produced, spots and ceiling mounted now available now.

Something different
longo,
I like the Tolomeo, but I like the Prototype table lamp by Ingo Maurer better. I prefer things that not everyone owns.

The best lamp for a Saarinen side table
is a floor lamp next to it.

have to agree
I don't like lamps on those tables. In fact I don't like anything on them for the most part. I am no minimalist, but I just don't like it for this design.

I agree
fastfwd and whitespike,
I agree with both of you that a floor lamp is the best. I was only replying to the question asked.
Also, it is generally difficult to get a lamp to have multiple functions (ambient and task lighting). That being said, my choice would be the Ingo Maurer (yes I am a fan and own both pieces) Swingading floor lamp. It will act as both a general light source and a reading lamp when required.

For me, I do not care for the stack of books and the Ingo Maurer table lamp, but the lamp is great and Ingo Maurer rules!

Yeah, love 'em - actually...
Yeah, love 'em - actually picked up two of these, and placed them on the both ends of my corner sofa - perhaps not the most ideal for a reading light, but that's my set up so far..already have an Arco lamp in the area so another floor lamp was not an option for me, anyway..

What's not to like
J.J.
Two Ingo Maurer Gulps, what's not to like about those lamps. Plus a Flos Arco floor lamp is a very good start.
Quality pieces by Ingo Maurer will always be able to find a place in your home.
I have the Artemide Tizio micro polished aluminum table lamp and the Tolomeo Clip Spot, but they are nothing special. Just nice lamps.
Congratulations on finding and acquiring the Ingo Maurer Gulps!

I have Laurel Lamp on mine
Looks great, echoes the Saarinen nicely, and provides good light. If you want a real reading lamp,a Tizio in silver would look great.
