A customer dropped off two lafonda chairs and asked me the history and what they were worth and how to recover them .
I replied toots stripe , Miller stripe, Jacobs coat all from Maharam fabrics were the original that Girard used.
The original Fabric sold by Herman miller designed by Alexander Girard for the Lafonda del sol Resturant in the Time Life Bldg in New York City . Charles Eames designed the chair for Herman Miller and Miller used the chair for 12 years taking it out of the line in 1973 .This chair is in the S.F. Modern museum , for the Girard show going on right now and it is great looking ,
I have made up three in the month in Miller stripe, and toots stripe .
the bases were so bad with a ugly black paint on them i had them sand blasted and they look great .
If any one has any info or knows anything else about this chair i would love to hear about it.
To me it is the coolest chair as there are just not that many out there,
cause of the short span they ran with Herman Miller .
I have three all-time...
I have three all-time favourite designers: Ettore Sottsass, Verner Panton and Alexander Girard. So of course, I'm sad about not being able to see this exhibition. I've tried to seach the net for photos but with no luck. Any hints?
About the LaFonda chair. I know that Girard asked Eames whether the back of his shell chairs could be lowered so they wouldn't disrubt the guest's view of Girard's table decorations at La Fonda Del Sol. Whether the LaFonda base (for both tables and chairs) was designed solely by Girard or in cooperation with Eames, I can't remember right now.
For more info/pictures on Girard's famous restaurant, you can visit this link:
