I have no idea what the problem is.
I have had at one time over 20 Lafonda chairs with bases, They came from a
Ivy league University and every one of the chairs had the most pitted chrome
bases, I though how could everyone be so pitted .
I know they did not leave Herman Miller in the 60's or 70's that way . Does any one have any idea why these chrome bases would pit like this . they still are some what shinny just so pitted I had about 6 powdercoated all were sand blasted and they do look great ..
I will have another 6 stripped and re chromed but I thought i would try this first
any one have any idea why they would pit like that ,
Sorry to ask...
but are you sure that they are chromed? The early versions were polished cast aluminum and cast aluminum has the tendency to show small outbursts of casting residue that oxydizes. It's one of the reasons for the later chrome plated versions.
In 2004 there was an interesting discussion on the La Fonda chairs on this forum (see link)

Thanks f or the info and the archive to the lafonda thread in Sept 04 very helpful . I have no idea if they are alumium or chrome.... I did have them sand blasted and powdercoated and they sure look good I think they were chrome plated to begin with if i was a betting man but all know that Charles Eames had a pinchet for Alumium so who knows
I have several pairs of the old green black mat finish ones i know underneath they are a old chrome that has to be powdercoated BOY are they ugly!!!
