Look what happened! I bought this pair of LCM's recently at auction. I had some suspicions about them, noting that the screws in the backrest looked new. Not sure if there was a funky, deceptive repair to the shock mounts or is this normal decay. What makes me suspicious is the gunky glue residue in the screw hole.
Please dear posters, don't call me a sucker...but what do you think of this? Or more importantly, can they be saved? I checked the undersides but everything looks original there.

Sorry
What exactly is your question?

My question is...
Can I fix them? I guess it's fruitless to speculate as to how the backrest just fell off without any trauma. But I can't resist...Is it a result of sustained and normal wear or were these jerry-rigged by shearing off the shockmount and re-gluing?

Hmmm
It looks like the original epoxy failed at some point (which is very common) and a quick fix of "super glue" was applied. Yes, the chair can be repaired, but the original epoxy should be removed from the back rest first. I had mine repaired at Herman Miller.

Thanks Woody
I'll price it out at Herman Miller. My projects are piling up.

Good call.
By the way, if anyone wonders what rift-sawn white oak is supposed to look like, here's an excellent example.
