Hi everyone,
I just got my womb chair and ottoman, purchased here in France at my local authorized Knoll retailer. The fabric is the high end Knoll 'Cato' in sand color.
I was struck however after a moment by a detail: there are 2 seams under the seat cushion (see photo), when I remember there was just one usually.
I phoned the Knoll showroom in Paris and they happened luckily to have the exact same model in display: their womb chair has 2 seams too, which left the sales representative and his colleague a bit confused about this too. They will try to phone the factory in Italy to know the reason why..
Do any of you have the same experience? I notice that chairs produced in the US for their domestic market have just one seam whereas ones produced by Knoll Europe in Italy for the european market (including UK) have 2 seams??
To be honest, I find it quite confusing and 2 seams look less elegant than just one, so I wonder if it's a fault or if there's a technical reason behind this..
Thanks for your input
Philippe

knoll
there's no technical reason behind this..
The guy doing the chair that morning had a little to much wine the night before. He felt like he needed to change things up a bit. He is no longer on the job sorry.

I wonder if it had to do with the fabric.
"Cato" is a very large scale weave and it would have ended up with a diagonal, or bias, seam if they took it all the way to the center line. This is kind of an unstable seam in that particular fabric, unless it has a heavier backing on it (which it might not, because that might keep it from hugging the curves of that chair as well).
So...I dunno. But that would be my first guess.

I've seen it both ways
and it doesn't seem to be fabric-dependent: My Womb in red hopsack has a single seam, but the chair illustrated in "1000 Chairs", also upholstered in red hopsack, has two seams like yours.
I actually prefer the look of the two seams.

Thanks for your input guys!
I checked my '1000 chairs' book, and indeed it is presented with 2 seams!
I would say one seam is the regular way to go, and 2 seams is.. well rarer, hence my question to Knoll (which haven't responded yet).
I know for sure the very limited edition last year (with cashmere by Loro Piana) had just one seam. It is still visible at aram.co.uk (with 50% discount, which is a true bargain and even more for a limited edition).

like spanky
I think it's to do with the grain of the fabric..
(and possibly the width?)
