Hey all,

I came across a 42" white laminate tulip dining table today at a new local mid-century modern shop. It is in almost pristine condition. Only drawbacks are a tad bit of cracking around edges of table top. Also, there are no screws to secure top to the base. Base is perfect. Table was a steal at $600. The base is marked a Knoll International. It doesn't have a sticker on it, but it does have an imprint in the actual metal.

Anyhoo, here are some pics of the table and the Knoll imprint. Can you give me your opinions? And also, what types of screws are needed to secure the base to the top?

Well, Cloud
at least the base is Knoll!
I don't understand the depression on the top, tho.

hmm...
Well, I wouldn't know. I've never seen a Knoll tulip table in person. And I don't know what they are supposed to look like when taken apart. The table is in great shape and definitely worth $600...likely quite a bit more. It is possible that the table top was made later or wasn't the original top with this table...perhaps someone had a base and had a top made to go with it, or had a base and found a top somewhere else. I'm not sure how to tell though. Pics would be much appreciated for what the bottom of a Knoll table top looks like. And I am missing all the pieces to attach the base and top together. What pieces do I need. The table top has places for four screws...three in a triangle shape and on in the middle of the triangle. The three in the triangle shape match where the screw spots are on the part attached to the base. However, there is no screw thing in the middle of the base part...possibly a missing piece?

oops...
I was wrong. There is a hole in the middle of the bottom of the table top, but no grooves for a screw so I guess a screw doesn't go there. What is the purpose of that hole? Anyone know?

Ummm...
What wood top? Am I missing another piece? I'm confused. Bear with me. I've never seen one of these tables in person before. I have a table top that came with the table...I just didn't get any screws or anything. I know the three holes on the outer edges that make the shape of a triangle are to screw into the table top which has corresponding holes. The table top also a a hole with no groves for a screw in the center which would be a above the metal piece in the center of the base. I was just wondering what that hole in the center of the table is for since is does not appear to be a screw hole.

And does anyone have any...
And does anyone have any ideas what size screws (length and width) I need to put the pieces together? Are they just regular screws that can be picked up at a hardware store, or are they special screws made specifically for this table?

I can't speak specifically...
I can't speak specifically about your tulip table, but I had a similiar situation with mine. I purchase one 47" Tulip table (black base, black marble top) in like-new condition from an architect that was moving to NY. Sold it to me for $450 - can you believe that? I'm sure he got a good discount to begin with though.
Anyway, it was missing one screw. I emailed KNOLL, and received a prompt response from a rep. She sent me the screw I needed within a week, NO CHARGE. That's class! I asked for an extra KNOLL sticker - yeah that was pushing my luck, they don't do that.
Anyway, my suggesstion is to email KNOLL. The last thing you want to do is use the wrong screw and muck-up the threads. Then your really screwed - pardon the pun.
Hope this helps.

Knoll tulip base
You have a genuine Knoll base and the mounting plate that screws to the base by a single threaded rod (see photo 2 below). That disc with the three holes screws off the base. You attach this disc to a wood or laminate top. Here's a Knoll tulip coffee table with 1) base, 2) plywood mounting plate and 3)wood venner top. Here is a Knoll tulip side table with top removed showing the threaded rod the mounting plate screws down onto. Where's your top? Attached it to the plate with three good wood screws. A hole in the middle of the top on it's bottom can be used to center the top on the plate. Put a short dowel in this hole. Place the mounting plate appx. over the center of the table tops bottom (sorry) and as you slide the plate around you can feel when dowel drops into the plate hole and you are centered. Three good wood screws and you're done..

Wow...thanks
But I have a questions...since the wooden disk thing is already attached to the base, do I need to do all of this? I measured, and it seems to be pretty well-centered so couldn't I just attached the table top to it with wooden screws and voila...the table top should be centered too? Is there a still reason for me to detach the wooden disk thing from the base? And you mention wooden screws. I've contacted Knoll, but do you have an idea in what size screws I would need? Thanks
So it looks like the table is authentic Knoll. I have a base marked Knoll International. I have the wooden disk thing attached to the base for the table top to go onto, and I have a white laminate table top to attach once I get appropriate screws. Wow! What a bargain for $600.

yes, it is authentic...
...just put three screws and you're done...no mystery here, i've had a few of those.
Good idea to email knoll for the right screws though.

I got a chance to look under...
I got a chance to look under my tulip table - remember it has a marble top and is newer like 2002ish. The basic assembly is the same as yours - top, middle plate, and a base. What I realize though, is my screws are VERY specific, and are NOT wood screws. They are metal screws and are kinda big. My screws attach the middle plate to the marble top. The middle plate must be attached to the base internally and can't be identified without removing the 200lb top.
I suggested emailing KNOLL, becasue I thought you needed the same type screw as mine. Obviously with a wood top, you just need a wood screw. Still best to contact KNOLL and see what they say.
