I just purchased this table on Ebay and the description stated:
Top comes in coated marble (pictured in glass)
Top made of 5/8" thick coated marble with transparent polyester to help eliminate use-associated stains
Please note that marbles with a polyester coating will yellow over time
Legs are made in polished chrome-plated steel
KnollStudio logo and designer's signature are stamped into the base
17" H x 45" W x 22.5" D
Three questions can you prevent the polyester coating from yellowing, how long does it take for this occurence to manifest itself, and what is Knoll Studio?
Most of our Knoll pieces are vintage Knoll, however, I have been growing impatient searching for a vintage model. Thank you in advance......
Three answers
"Can you prevent the polyester coating from yellowing?"
Only if you seal it in a dark room and pump out all the oxygen.
"How long does it take for this occurence to manifest itself?"
Years and years.
"And what is Knoll Studio?"
A quick look at Knoll's web page ( http://www.knoll.com) or Google ( http://www.google.com) will tell you that it's Knoll's modern-furniture division.
Thank you
As naive as my questions might seem. I hope that others who stumble upon this forum might use these responses as a basis in solving their own doubt with respect to purchases.
It seems that people are hesitant with purchasing vintage if their is no tag and new if the stated manufacturer is not exactly as they would expect.
In the early going of my collecting I can recall numerous moments where I passed on a handful of newer "Knoll Studio" products just because the inscription included "Studio". Seriously, I assumed that they were fakes. Since, the auction catalogs usually stated Knoll and Associates or Knoll Art Metal.
Your advice was greatly appreciated.
Lesson learned:
When in doubt just head to the company website.
Blessings
