But a friend who doesn't normally have trouble with things like that said that it was remarkably difficult to install, and I've read that it's tedious even with an assistant.

It's more difficult with the longer models. I have the short one and I found following the mounts lead me to the studs in my wall. It's certainly not a stretch to imagine the long models prove to be more challenging.
