I recently purchased a pair of sofas that were sold as "in the style of Milo Baughman" and then yesterday I saw the same sofa in a catalogue (linked below) marked as Harvey Probber but with a John Stuart / Erwin Lambeth tag. I have searched the forum for info on John Staurt and it seems they were retailers rather than manufacturers... is this correct or were they both ?
If both who designed for them ?
Is Lambeth a manufacturer or designer ?
Also is there any link between Probber and Lambeth ?
can anyone shed any light on any links between these three names please.
Thanks.
ps: I am a dealer in twentieth century furniture along with being a design addict, so along with having an interest in furthering my own knowledge this info will also be part of the sale of these sofas when I eventually put them on my website.
Um, yeah
Harvey Probber was a fine designer, but I'll try to answer your questions.
It's my understanding that John Stuart did import and retail, but they did not manufacture furniture.
Erwin Lambeth was a manufacturer, not a designer.
To my knowledge there is no connection between Harvey Probber and Erwin Lambeth. The style sofa (or chair) with the exposed metal frame that you have is often attributed to Baughman, but I do not believe that is correct. It's similar in style to some of his designs but not a Baughman piece. Nor is it a Probber design. Auction houses can and do misattribute designs, especially if they do not specialize in modern design.
Thanks pegboard.
So now...
Thanks pegboard.
So now its basically a case of finding out if there were any designers of note who worked for Lambeth. I have emailed them to see if they can or will shed any light on the subject.
ps: I figured the Harvey Probber link was a bit shaky and Im aware of how misleading auction house attributions seem to be but its a bit leftfield that they show a Lambeth label and decide its Probber.
