Absolutely,
a Louis Vuitton vintage makeup case that ladies used to take on the train. FABULOUS!

I know my ideas are a bit unconventional, but...
1. A Japanese bento box. Lots of compartments intended for food but wonderful for storing jewelry.
2. OK, this one's a bit out there but SO functional. A red tool chest, like you'd get at Home Depot or Sears. This is what I use. It's sturdy, lockable, has room to store other important things like passports, and has all these cool skinny drawers which are already lined with a soft rubber. I have the smallest one I could find and it's perfect! About 20"x12"x8".
3. Artist's paint and supply box. Again lots of compartments and a simple styling. Usually wood, so it's paintable to blend in with anything you've already got.
interesting choices...
the toolbox one sparked a thought, why not a machinist toolbox? typically made of wood, often in walnut,simple/ clean in design, felt lined drawers, and readily avaiable anywhere...and with a little work and some hardware change-ups, you would have a great looking chest for little $$..and a little effort goes along way... and they ar almost always lockable...
p.s. so glad this came up, ive been looking for the same thing my Mrs. .......the nelson chest is great, but id rather spend that kinda change on something that goes in a jewelry box.....

Riki and norm get my vote
Riki and norm,
You must be peeking in my windows. I bought the Louis Vuitton case for use in the guest bathroom to store toiletries and the Tall Nelson miniature case (without the base) for womens jewelery and other sundries. The Nelosn chest is just so so, but I really appreciate the Louis Vuitton case. I use the Philippe Starck Descamps Night and Day towel holder for the base of the Vuitton case.
You guys have good taste, or at least it agrees with mine today.
I gotta veto the LV idea on principle.
It's just too-too. Too status-y. Too monogram-y. Too cartoon-y a declaration of "luxury" brand.
Whatever the virtues of LV luggage, it's overshadowed by unpleasant associations of "status object", as far as I'm concerned. They may as well change the LV monogram to interlinked currency symbols.
