While much of Jens Risom's early career is well established (studied under Ole Wanscher at the Kunsthåndværkerskolen, emigrated to New York in 1939, then started collaboration with Hans Knoll in 1941), less well known is that he had a brief collaboration with two Danish Cabinetmakers in the late 1930's, which produced pieces for the annual Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition.
In 1937, Risom designed a living room set in cherry for Normina A/S, followed by a mahogany bedroom suite for Thomsen in 1938. Both series follow the Kaare Klint / Ole Wanscher design philosophy of simple refinement of historic precedent. There is not a strong formal connection with his early work for Knoll.
Risom turns 100 next month.
