Is this an original Nelson design or did someone DIY it? I like it and want to either find or make one. It looks a bit like the base on Greta Grossman lights that I've seen.

I've seen these before - or something very much like - and described as designed by someone else. I don't think it was American. But I know the one I saw was not Nelson.

It's a little unpolished...
I'd at least run the cord through the support tube so it could exit near the foot instead of draping over or hanging from the structure.

Thank you. I cannot STAND wiring that just flops about like that, not integrated into the design in any way.

Agree
Agree about the wiring. I'm thinking of making one out of electrical conduit so the cord can pass through it. I'd then powder coat it black.

Here's my version
So I finally did make a lamp base out of conduit. Here's what it looks like. I used 1/2 inch EMT conduit and bent it with a conduit bender. I welded the 2 pieces of conduit together. I can't decide if it needs to be powder coated black or remain as is. I think eventually I'll switch the saucer bubble for a round one. Excuse the ugly floor that I'm working on and the drapes that need to be hemmed.

I vote
for black and adding Grossman style discs on the feet.

Looks nice.
If the welds and bends are pretty, I'd leave it as-is. The bare metal looks better than black, I think... And besides, isn't it moderately hard to get a nice powdercoat finish on galvanized steel?

.
I like it overall but could you perhaps have made the cord exit just above the weld?

Looks great! One thing that bothered me about the original was the cord hanging willy-nilly out there. You've resolved that, though would it have been possible to drill holes in each piece and then have them welded together where the holes intersect. Then maybe the cord could run down the body and out one of the BACK legs. It'd make it just a little bit cleaner. This is just me with my unreasonable distaste for cords though. Seriously looks great!
