I just came across this rocking chair on the web. I thought I would share it since it is from 1851, manufactured by RW Winfield. Cited as an early exercise in "Industrial Minimalism", thought to be designed by Peter Cooper (1791-1883).

But how would it look...
But how would it look sitting in one wearing your stovepipe hat or a whalebone corset?

Yes, a photo of Abraham...
Yes, a photo of Abraham Lincoln posed in one, that would be a good picture.

Corbus chaise?
I recall seeing that photo and my eyes saw the influence for LeCorbiser - Eilen Gray chaise lounge from the 1930s.

I own one of these!
I own this chair! My seat has been replaced at some time however. The seat has been replaced with crushed velvet, tapestry and fringe, all of which is ancient and well worn.
It is not a comfy chair....but who ever sat in the crushed velvet left quite a wear mark so they must have loved it. I feel in love with the graceful lines and modern form.
My rocker stops (bottom of rockers to keep you from flipping) have been removed. No danger of flipping though.
It is a great old chair, as relevant today as it was the day it was made.

10 years ago I made a couple of these beautiful rocking chairs for one customer in Switzerland. Here is a photo of an unfinished one.. others photos are lost.

May find this book of interest
A fave since shortly after its publication in 1970, heavily illustrated.
The Brooklyn Museum had a 19th Century Modern exhib ending this past spring (2012).
