So I picked this lamp up on my trip home yesterday. I bought it because I thought it was fun and poppy and cheap :). I'm slightly confused by the design however...
I knew nothing of Ingo Maurer before I bought this lamp, but it appears that oversized bulb lamps and Maurer go hand in hand. If this is a rip of his style, then it's a high quality one. Milk glass shade and all metal construction. I couldn't find any markings on this thing, so I have no idea who manufactured it. I've seen a few that are of the same construction (same bulb base design and same cords), but they're all hanging pendants, and don't have this bizarre cage-like sculpture surrounding the bulb. Anyone have any theories as to what purpose that could serve? There's a plate on the back that could potentially be used to hang it and the lower back leg, which is a different shape than the others would help the bulb stay parallel to a wall if used as a sconce (but then what would you need the other three legs for).
If anyone has any insight regarding what this structure could be intended for, I'd love to hear it! And if anyone knows of this version of the lamp, whether it's actually tied to Maurer or whether it's simply an "inspired by" designed by an unknown, etc, I'd love to hear that as well. Thanks!
Hey, guys thanks for the...
Hey, guys thanks for the responses! I'd thought about the utility light/cage connection as well. It does seem to be the most plausible explanation.
Re: the ON/NO switch...that was actually a pin I hung on one of the little tightening screws. It says "vote NO on women's suffrage" (not a position I actually support 🙂 ). So yeah, that's not original to the piece.
So maybe I'm missing a piece that'd wrap around the front (to complete the cage). Unless I come across any additional info, I guess this is the explanation we'll have to go with! Thanks for everyone's input!
