When I moved to Austin recently I decided to rent (I owned previously in a lower priced city). I have noticed that I have let color start to trickle in more than I used to, maybe in response to the fact that I am not allowed to paint.
I have always been a huge fan of red, but I know a little goes a long way. After framing and hanging some prints of Ettore Sottsass typewriters I noticed almost every piece of art or decorative piece that I have employs red.... two part question:
1.Have I gone overboard?
2. Does it fight my tendency to use earthy and neutral upholstery and floor coverings?

Well, in my last house I had one whole red wall with rest of the walls white.
In this apartment the color is neutral, which I would have preferred at least pure white. I was just curious to see if you thought the little splashes of red were distracting ... simply wondering, because at the end of the day you should follow your natural tendencies...

At some point I may buy this place. I would redo some of it.
What is your honest thoughts on the tile floor and the type of tile on the counter tops and around the fireplace?
The main thing I would change (you cant see it in the photos) is the kitchen cabinets and the flooring in the bedrooms. The kitchen cabinets are sort of your typical apartment medium stained wood and the flooring in the bedrooms is just beige carpet (ugh).
I know a good carpenter that prefers modern design. I would probably get plywood (with exposed edging) cabinets with sliding doors a la ESU.
The kitchen counter tops are these balck and white speckled ceramic tile. Not bad, but I would like something different. Perhaps woodblock or a simple laminate with a fun (but no overbearing) hue.
The floors would be kind of expensive to do. I would either A. Just redo the carpet in the bedrooms with Interface Flor or B. Change it all to bamboo. B is my favorite idea. But of course expensive.
The other thing I could do to like the cabinets more is simple paint them glossy black with the rest of the apt. being white, perhaps with an accent wall in an interesting wallpaper or color.

Whitespike... it was at a shop called Home Girls on Burnet road. They had two sitting in the window for a while with red upholstered seats and I believe they were wanting $450 each. It's an interesting shop, but their prices are a little out there. At the moment they have a pair of eames DCM's for $350ish each, two beat-up blue eames side shells for $125 each, and a large Richard Schultz coffee table for $1200.
