I found this old article that says there was an Ikea version of the Eames LCW/DCW. Has anyone seen this chair? Pictures? Link below.
I don't think they copied the DCW
I don't remember ever seeing an IKEA chair that could be called a knockoff of the LCW or DCW. I read the article and it sounded more like the IKEA reference was a general comment on how IKEA copies well known designs, not that particular one.
They used to sell a knockoff of Børge Mogensen's wood settee, the one whose sides drop down. There were small differences. Their current "Poang" chair is a lot like an Aalto design. I think they used to have a chaise longue in the same style with woven webbing. I saw one at an auction recently and got kind of excited until I noticed the exposed hex nuts on the sides. Oh well.
Those are only a few examples. They do quite a few knockoffs. They also have some good original designs too, plus a lot of mediocre designs that are not very original and not really knockoffs of anything in particular either.
I was preparing...
...an answer, expressing more or less the same opinion. I suspect that Alexa James refered to the kind of general "me too" attitude of a lot of Ikea products. They often design "...in the spirit of..." Sometimes comming very close like the "Urban" chair (900.872.49), sometimes the differences are minimal. The "Knappa" fixture (600.713.44) for instance is quite an accurate copy of Hoyrup's "Cactus" fixture....anyway Spanky said it better....
Hi Builder...
I did not realize that I could be "missed" but this being said there are only three good reasons. One is called "busy"...but that has not changed since I left school 37 years ago...a second is the effect of the (Hermann)Ebbinghaus curve and last but not least the subjects of discussion on the forum. Part of it is called summer, part of it is too much "Neo-modern" for my taste. Not that I am critical of the justified concerns about the right screw and the right sticker on original mid century design, but as an active designer I would prefer to see it more balanced with what is happening in 2006 and what has to happen in the years to come.
It worries me that thousands of "designers" are pumping out so called products with no other visible talent than the ability to play with 3D modelling software. Understanding of the needs of the user: "0". Cultural content: "0". Rational use of materials and production: "0"...I asked this same question two yeras ago: "Have you seen a decent cell-phone lately?". So...plenty of things to discuss on a "Design-dedicated forum"
Cell phone
Koen.. funny you should mention cell phones. I'm looking at the Samsung t509. It is simple, slim, and calls people. It has a modest number of additional features, but seems to focus mostly on its primary function. It is also in the $100 range (less with contract) making it affordable to the masses. And - thus far it hasnt been subjected to the ridiculous clamoring of the modern advertising machine.
