Did IKEA make a webbed Poang many years ago? I seem to remember them back in the early 90s, before I shopped at IKEA much. And I saw a webbed lounge chair with exposed hex bolts (like Poang's) at an auction a few years back. It seemed familiar.
They are getting stuff in the stores now that will be in the new 2011 catalog coming out in July or August. The Baltimore store just got the dandelion pendant light (Maskros), which I LOVE and would get in a heartbeat if we had a 12' ceiling anywhere in our house:
oh, also
...forgot to say, forget the greasy meatballs! The open face shrimp sandwich is my fave. I take my 2-year-old grandson there for lunch every week; he gets the mac 'n' cheese and steamed veggies and I get this. Perfect combination of flavors and it's always fresh and good, surprisingly. (Most of their hot food is awful.)
WOW!
I really like that chandelier! That just might do it for me in the dining area of the new abode. And I agree, the shrimp salad is quite tasty. I seem to go to IKEA with my sister, so we like to 'Swede out'. We usually get gravlax, meatballs and the shrimp salad. Then lots of knackerbrod, and that lovely carbonated pear cider! We also end up leaving with a box of Anna's Pepparkakor and usually the Punschrullar too! YUM! I miss my grandmother immensely when I go to IKEa cuz so many of the food items remind me of her. Too bad IKEA doesn't offer pickled herring and headcheese!
Olive
That chandelier is 30" across! I think the flowery parts are thin plastic. It looks a little cheap up close but you would not get that from it at a distance at all.
IKEA does sell pickled herring in the little grocery store area, which in the Baltimore store is just past the checkout. Have you tried the Swedish rye bread mix that comes in the milk carton-type container? You add water and maybe oil or melted butter, I forget, then stir and pour the batter into a loaf pan to rise. Bake and you're done. It's that heavy, dark rye with seeds. To die for when still warm, more of an acquired taste once it's cool. I like it with pickled herring and sweet butter. Yum. (I developed a liking for it only after living in Denmark, though!)
They also used to sell Dream Cookies in a plastic tub that were very good---I think they had cardamom in them. They might still have them. I also love the rusks with cardamom. Haven't tried the lingonberry bread mix yet, but I'm tempted.
The Maskros light
Really caught my eye also Olive but upon closer inspection, I thought it needed more attention to detail. There are similarities to the Random Light by Bertjan Pot but just like that design, I object to the exposed bulb. If you have the glare of a bare bulb in your eyes, it makes it hard to appreciate the lamp. The plastic shapes that the "flower" stems fit into seem too simple and I'd have considered molding it as one piece which could also function as a bulb diffuser.
Still, it's pretty cool and while a large piece its open, airy quality makes it not feel too big for even a modest space between table and ceiling.
30" isn't too big for my space
and as PG-M says it's very airy. So I'll have to take a look at it. The hubs and I are making an 8-hour O/W roadtrip to Phoenix to do some IKEA shopping for our new house. I can look at it then...if it's not there, well, it's not.
Spanky, Oh yeah, I've bought the herring in the food shop and the gravlax and the fish eggs in the toothpaste tube...but not all the IKEAs have complete food shops, some only have cookies and such. I'm into the hard-core Swede stuff...except for filmjolk which is a weird slimy form of yogurt that pours out of a pitcher like snot...can't go there. The bread you made is called Limpa. Big time YuleBord food item in my family. Takes forever and 3 weeks to make from scratch...

"I seem to remember whitespike saying something about a fear of all shellfish. Or maybe it was spiders?"
Weird. i think you have me confused with someone else. I actually own a shellfish and spider pet store. Couldn't be me. I actually have a hybrid spider / crab named Pam.
