Hi everyone,
I recently acquired a modular unit but haven't seen anything like it. It absolutely is not CADO - that's for sure! I'm not even certain if it's mid century modern or not - it looks more contemporary to me due to the colour and the blockiness but I've been told this was bought about 35 years ago so that would make it mid to late 70's.
As you can see the shelves are free-standing (well, they attach to the bottom cabinets. It's made of teak wood but a very light color.
Anyone seen anything similar? Would love to know more and to find it a family or name 🙂

Teak??
Well I must ask: how are you sure it is teak? To me it doesn't look like teak at all. The color looks like bleached mahogany, or a light wood like maple, or beech with a yellowish stain or finish. Sort of like Heywood Wakefield's finishes. (But it isn't Heywood Wakefield)
Post a close up of the wood and we may be able to tell you what it is. If that really is teak, I'd be very curious to know how it was done.
I'm not sure if it was just ...
I'm not sure if it was just fashionable at the time or whether it was a question of quality, but I have seen many teak pieces from the 70's in that lighter teak color.
I myself had (for a brief moment in time) a small modular bookcase from the 70's similar to a Ladderax... but not. Very similar hardware from what I can tell to yours. The quality was low, and the teak was very light. I am certain it was teak, as I had to sand a few spots and re-oil. Sanding teak stained oak or some other wood would've left light spots to restain...
Teak's not a stretch at all.
It looks very much like '70's "Scandinavian" units that were sold by the boatload here in the US and, as Solange said, often of middling quality, usually particle board construction, and almost exclusively veneered in teak.
The photo cracks me up, too. With the TV, it could have been taken in any of my high school friend's parent's basements back when I was a teenager.
Here's one of my favorite online wood species identification sites for comparing samples:

Hi everyone,
thanks for all your responses so far! I'm a bigger fan of the darker teak myself (love me some CADO units but they are out of my price reach for now).
tktoo - thanks for the informative site! I don't know much about different kinds of woods so this proved very helpful.
Solange - you're very observative and spot on 🙂 Located in Montreal so could very well be the R.S. Associates you mentioned.
