I've been dying to find out who made this chair. I've seen it around a bit. This is from the Apartment Therapy's Big Book of Small, Cool Places... which is a wonderful book but unfortunately they don't identify a lot of the beautiful pieces of furniture in the book.

I don't believe it has a name
Or a designer, per se.

Mayan Folding Chair
The chair is sometimes called a 'Mayan Folding Chair'. They are often made as DIY projects.
...the Mayan connection has me stumped

Wow! PERFECT. Thanks so much for this information! I've been obsessed with this chair. Never thought I'd get the info to build one myself.

Mayan Connection
It appears as if this style of chair was used in the sacrificing of virgins for the sun god. The virgin would be strapped into the chair, while knives were inserted through the slotted seat and back and pulled in an upward motion very quickly. This would keep the sun god happy, and he would in return leave the light on.
