I just bought a pair of chairs. The form is beautiful, incredibly comfortable, the construction is quality throughout and I would venture to say they are staved teak. All that said, I don't know who the designer is or country of origin. I bought them in the Los Angeles area from a mid century modern dealer, who was not able to offer up much information on them.
The only markings are found underneath the seat and done in what looks like black sharpie. Markings are as follows: Form #66 with a signature of WM or WN. Also on top center it is marked 5-94. The other chair bears the same markings with the exception of the Form #, which is #64, rather than 66. Both chairs are identical. 4 Photos posted via link.
Thanks.
Gorgeous chairs.They...
Gorgeous chairs.
They look like they are half inspired by danish modern and half by the work of Sam Maloof, who would be a well known inspiration in the LA area. And maybe a few other inspirations that I am too dense to recognize. But I would guess an American woodworker, possibly in the LA area designed and made them.
Is it too obvious that 5 - 94 is the date: May 1994? And you have the numbered chairs 64 and 66 of that design?
thank you.
I think you're spot on. I will continue to research it further. A rather quick web search on Maloof generated the work of William Ng, Maloof student (?). In addition, I found a woodworking design school in California bearing the name of William Ng. I may be onto something now!
5-94...could be the date. I had thought the chairs to be older than Circa 90s.
I will follow up with addition information. In the meantime, please send your thoughts on the chair.
Thanks.

Also, the photos make the wood look much more like walnut. The color of the wood is very walnut. The grain, insofar as I can see it, looks like it might be another wood with more open, straight grain that has been stained the color of walnut. But I can barely see it.

You could try searching The Smithsonian collections, something similar might come up and point you in the right direction.
Or email Pritam and Eames, someone there might know.

Leon Meyer
Maybe. Or maybe just another influence....

or maybe Whitney Meyer??
I just stumbled across the chair below.
It's dated 12-94 and bears many of the same hallmarks as the Leon Meyer rocking chair.
However, it has some noticeable differences. 1) The armrests and rockers are a continuous curved piece of steel 2) it has a headrest that extends beyond the regular chair 3) it is signed Whitney Meyer....
Of course, I have not been able to find out anything about a Whitney Meyer... any ideas?
