Okay, I recently saw a very nice rosewood cabinet/sideboard which was definitely a high-end design. There were the remains of a label on the back of the piece but nothing was left of the label that could be read. It was not identified as being by any particular designer but I had my hunches that it was by a well-known designer. I was sure I had seen the piece before. I sadly didn't have the money to buy the piece then or I probably would have purchased it.Anyhoo, I decided to do some investigating and have since identified the piece as being by Ib Kofod-Larsen. Every time I have seen the piece on the internet it was attributed to him. Yay! So one mystery solved. However, this led to a new mystery. The piece I saw while being exactly the same in every detail had different legs. The pics I have found online all show the piece with steel legs. The piece I saw was with wooden legs. Now, the question is...were the wood legs original or did someone remove the steel legs and add wooden ones instead? I was hoping that perhaps someone with more experience then me might know if this piece was originally sold with wood legs. I much preferred the version with the wood legs so if it was not original to the piece, I might stop looking for this piece as I refuse to make such alterations to a lovely vintage designer piece. I have provided a pic of the piece with steel legs. Does anyone know if this piece was made with wooden legs also?
It seems entirely possible that this cabinet could have been manufactured with wooden legs. Photos of the wooden legged version might help. Little details about how both pieces were made are very likely to tell you whether the legs are original to the piece.
I would not believe the Ib Kofod Larsen design credit on a number of Internet listings. Those handles are found on a variety of pieces that get credited to various designers (e,g. Arne Vodder) never with a scrap of proof. Who is the maker? (Design credit without maker always bears an extra level of suspicion because maker is usually much easier to determine).
