For whatever reason I joined a mid century modern group on Facebook. It lasted about about five minutes. I'm going to be mean and say that though I wouldn't call myself an expert in MCM, I quickly found out how much less the "experts" out there know. OMG. The misattributions. The lotto ticket mentality...you know. I found this! What is it? Is it going to make me a millionaire?  The arguments over cheap Chinese light fixtures being the real deal. Frankly, it was depressing to witness the plebian feeding frenzy. No real interest in design. No interest in trying to figure things out on their own. Grabbing at junky straws left and right. I'm a bitch, I know. But geez, I'm glad to have the serenity of Design Addict.

With over 32,000 members in that group, there is certainly a bunch of noise but I am still able to learn a few things.  I appreciate the eye candy that is occasionally posted amongst the plethora of crap.

Woody,
I thought it would be the same for me, but instead it just made me sad. I can't put a finger on what disturbed me so much.Dealers asking a bunch of people with no experience for advice? People trying to talk themselves into something cheap they've found but don't really like? The lack of desire to develop taste? Idiots who don't even know the most basic of MCM furniture designers? Like a Thonet chair...really? Those are pretty distinctinve and common. You can't figure that one out on your own? The greed? The fact that most of them just wanted to accumulate junk. No one really seemed to want to buy anything of quality. It was just about amassing garbage. I'm not a dealer, but found it truly depressing that most of the posts were about finding junk and seeing if it was worth anything. Maybe they wanted to become dealers, but didn't want to put any work into figuring out the business. Most of them seemed to think that being a dealer was nothing more than buying garbage at Goodwill and posting a photo of it to find out how much it was worth and then reselling it somewhere.
I am not sure what was wrong, but after about two weeks I decided it was polluting my soul. I didn't want to share my hobby with 99.9% of the people on there. They were just ruining it for me.
