I
guess it was only a matter of time before someone directed a comment at me personally as it seems to happen to everyone on here at some point in time. I have been a member for a while, no where near as long as most on here, and sort of consider people on here colleagues/friends in a way as I value their opinions. What was wrong with my question? I wanted to purchase an Eames chair as I do not have one. I did the background work and looked at completed ebay listings and went to liveauctioneers so did not ask what it is worth. I really wanted a vintage chair with nicely worn leather and yes, wanted one in rosewood as anyone else on this forum would likely prefer. I attempted to compare pics online to determine differences in appearance of rosewood from Walnut and it was for the most part very obvious, but unfortunately I came across a few pictures of older chairs in Walnut that had a somewhat similar appearing shell so was confused. I thought the asking price for a vintage rosewood chair was a GREAT deal so after getting the "approval" from forum members, I went to look at it. Unfortunately, all the buttons were missing from the seat cushion, the seat cushion was flat, the plastic underside of the seat cushion was torn where the clips on the shell attach so when sitting in it there was a 2 inch gap opening between the seat cushion and the side of the shell and there were multiple veneer chips....not just the ones noticeable on the head rest in the pics I posted from the craigslist add I responded to. There was a 2 inch chunk missing from the front lip of the chair that was very noticeable and another at least 1 inch piece of veneer missing from the side of the chair in addition to multiple smaller ones here and there excluding the ones on the backside of the headrest. It just didn't appeal to me in that conditionand I knew I would probably never get around to having it fixed up. Eventually I will find one perfect for me, I am in no rush.
Follow up
The whole thing is a bit comical as the original craigslist add I responded to was for $1500. I tried to get over to see the chair immediately as that price was unbelievable but the seller had other errands to run and wasn't available to meet until later in the evening. The seller called me a few hours before our scheduled time to meet and informed me that he has had multiple callers offering 2000. This is when I asked for the advice of the forum as the price was just getting a bit too steep for my pockets. The barrage responses made it so that he would not accept less, trust me, I tried. I presume some have provided him with more information on the chair as it is now re listed today on craigslist for 3000 and is even on ebay (for some reason as being in Virginia) with the added info that it is Rosewood. He was a really nice fellow, and I presume like anyone, is afraid to let something go for much less than what it may be worth secondary to a lack of knowledge regarding the chair. Not sure why he isn't disclosing the areas of damage though, probably because he doesn't realize that is important to some.
My apologies also, j.
I've been there, too, and have gotten burned more than once.
I guess I didn't understand how whether or not the set has rosewood veneer would change it's perceived value to a buyer unless it might be used as a selling point, as I've seen more than a few walnut sets with more attractive veneer than many rosewood examples.
That was entirely my misunderstanding. Thank you for setting things straight.
Your Eames lounge is still out there waiting for you, as mine was. I wish you only the best of luck in finding each other.
