Strange times.
Eames is as important as Aalto and Loos.
And he is more importand than Kaj Frank
And let's come to the present day. Some Mrs Patricia Urquiola won the wallpaper magazine design awards beating over The Bouroullec brothers...

This worldwide influence is what has made people like this so interesting to me. When someone that truly is great is allowed by the world to do great things ... it makes me wonder about what went right. So many times the greats are spat upon or ignored. Why do people dismiss a great just because he/she had the good fortune of not being ignored? Jealousy? A silly attempt to be unique?
Actually, pop culture itself (a favorite subject of your beloved Warhol) intrigues me. I often think about simple things like Coca-Cola, blue jeans, etc. and marvel at how almost everyone in a modernized society has experienced these things (no matter their economic status). Modernist designers that can have a similar influence really hold the key to helping the world to understand good design.

The Eameses (and btw, there were two of them, poor Ray is always slighted) are interesting and all, but what about "I am my sofa" I thought that was an interesting thread. Doesn't anyone have any more on-topic comments?

You are right Olive...
Back to the question...my sofa is the tripple seat version of the high back easy chair made by Fredericia Stolefabrik and designed by Borge Mogensen in 1960 (we also have the two and single seater). We did buy them around 1975 which means that at the time they were certainly not the latest thing on the market. But when it came on the market it was way beyond my budget and I waited until I could affort it. It probably makes me a fiscal conservative and in terma of design someone rather independant, not influenced by trends or fashions and with an interest for quality more than for the newest ideas. Over the years I kept enjoying the proportions, the quality of the oak frame and the fine detailing. Since we moved to the country I am less happy with it. Somehow the smaller space does not allow it to play it's proper role in the general design. So I have been moving the thing around and around and in spite of having found a very practical lay-out, I am still unhappy with it...which does not mean that I am unhappy with myself....
p.s. I find it strange that one would want to compare the Eames' with Kaj Frank. First of all the Eames' worked mostly in furniture which is because of it's very nature an area of activity that receives more public exposure than ceramics, which was Kaj Frank's main domain. (Ask anybody in the street who Christian Dior is and you will get a plausible answer, as about Eames and less people will have a clue) Secondly Kaj Frank insisted on being un-known. Other than his students and the people at Arabia, few people knew about him. The Eames' did not dislike public exposure at all... at least if I judge by my own memories of their work at the U.S.A. pavillion at the Brussels world exhibition 1958. This being said, what is the interest of comparing?....other than selling wallpaper....

Also ? I know what you mean about being happy with an item but unhappy with how it occupies space. Smaller spaces are especially difficult. My own place is tiny and I have many objects that I fear parting with. It makes it an interesting challege .... one that sometimes eems to be one that cannot be won.
Sometimes I consider downsizing the amount of items I have and getting even better items in fewer numbers. Then comes the sentimental value ....
My items definitely say I have a great sense of sentimental value.

I like that a lot. It has a very reserved and architectural appreal to it ... I often love things that don't scream at you.
I can see where a larger space would enable you to appreciate this piece at more angles ... is it the fact that you cannot see that back that bothers you?

Dear Whitespike...
I agree, to have them standing against the wall justs takes the air out of a very architectural shape.
