Tomorrow, I am going to look at a chair that I am told was bought in 1959 by a family member. It is the plywood/leather chair with the ottoman. It is missing a button, but they tell me in otherwise good condition. The owners think it is a HM but the tag is missing. They said it could also be a replica. Are there any clues for telling the real thing? It is light brown.

Thanks!

Never mind!
I found my answer and apparently this is not an original...what I learned is that the Eames chairs have five legs, the knock off's four. And the arm rest is much more detailed than the ko's. Also, the bolts are visible from the outside of the wood on some ko's. Saved me a trip!

Some knockoffs have five legs
but i've yet to see a knockoff that had concealed fasteners. So look there first to rule out.

and almost all
and almost all the knockoffs have a tilt mechanism underneath - not the fixed tilt of the HM.
Sadly this happens a lot - people get a general sense of the Eames lounge and think the Plycraft their grandpa gave them is the same thing 🙁 I was in a Mod shop and overheard the owner politely explaining the difference to a customer who was SO irate at the suggestion that Grandpa would have sullied his name by buying a knock-off. I felt very badly for both parties in the discussion.
