I have four uncomfortable Thonet chairs from the 1940s like those in the photo below. If I sell them on ebay, how obligated am I to point out that they're uncomfortable? The seats have almost no padding (they were designed this way.) I've come to hate them. :/

RESPECT...you got mine just for being honest! Comfort can be subjective, so to me, you're not obligated. People do buy chairs just to look at or function as filler.

So, sell 'em on
eBay.
You'll get good money for 'em.

Thanks
One ebay photo will be a side shot that shows how flat the seats are.

I had a pair of Thonet armchairs with 'thin' yellow vinyl seat and back cushions and I don't remember them being too uncomfortable. Is it possible that these chairs (shown above) have been in properly recovered missing the right amount of cotton batting to provide proper cushion?
I'm sure that these chair can be reupholstered for a more comfortable feel without sacrificing the correct look of these chairs.

When photographing objects to sell on Ebay, one should aspire to produce photos that are clear and informative enough to make a description unnecessary.
So, ixnay on the comfort rating. Let the buyer come to their own conclusions, based on your photos.
(It's safe to assume that Thonet left this bit of information out of their advertising, yet their reputation seems to have survived.)

I have to agree about...
I have to agree about posting good photos.
I have only bid on good photo listings. And i have won some kinda bad
sleezy listings. Hidden problems.
I've never sold anything, but i have some coveted items that i would be
ashamed to sell. I have a clock that i got for 9 dollars that consistently sells
for 150. It is crap. So if i sold it i would say so and just want some money back.
Some people feel differently about certain things. I'm now trying out my third
set of dining chairs. The first set i saw in a magazine and they looked fab,
but not for dining, just looks.(you can't lean forward, as they were designed for
theatre. Comfortable, but not for eating)
Just be honest with photos.
Some women wear shoes for looks. Hurt like hell. Fashion over function.

Batting
Barrympls, I think you're right. They could be reupholstered with more batting. Why didn't I think of that? I own a later Thonet with more batting and it's very comfortable. This may be my first project to send to Retro Redo. (Link below)

the chairs I used to have were in original condition, had arms and the chair kinda leaned forward a bit. Very substantial with a back not unlike yours but not as long necked.
It was upholstered in vintage mustard colored naugahide (it has a few small tears). The cotton batting was still supple and they were quite comfortable chairs. I kinda wish I still had 'em.
Your pair of side chairs are really quite sweet. Fix
em up....
