What is really the safest way to remove paint from a vintage Eames Armshell???

Hi there, I have two vintage black Eames armshells that have a set-in streak of black paint on the bottom, as well as the odd paint dab on the arms. In my Google search I have come across some suggesting CitriStrip--my fear is that it will strip right through the paint and damage the chair or loosen the epoxy of the Shockmounts....

Does anyone have actual experience using CitriStrip?? I have seen the "Chairfag" guide, but that is more of a total overhaul to a chair--I just need something to remove dabs of paint.

Any help would be great...thanks!

the paint is quite thin--but it seems to be very set in --going back 40 years
I tried a test using fine steelwool, and nothing changed

try using Easy-Off
oven cleaner...no joke it will remove paint off of fiberglass even jellcoats without harming orig. surface. Simply spray-on, wait a bit and wipe off, then wash..no problem.
Warning: WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES AND GLOVES...this stuff will burn your skin!

I have used
"Magic Eraser"-type sponges with good success on light paint and other marks.

I've done this with shells...
I've done this with shells completely covered in paint. Citristrip can be used, but don't leave it on too long as it's not intended for use on fiberglass.
I used another organic stripper, though, that worked like a charm and no damage to gelcoat underneath. I wish I remembered the name; I don't have the can handy. Got it at home depot, and it came in a white tub with a green rubber top. It says it can be used on fiberglass on the tub.
I can't find it on the website, but I know I found it at Home Depot. And the stuff worked perfectly. Also, it smells rather pleasant, unlike Citristrip, which even though citrusy, will give you a headache and stink up your place.
Don't use the Magic Erasers, they will go through the gelcoat if you apply anything but a little force. (will do the same thing on Emeco chairs...learned the hard way)
Hope that helps!

restoration fascination
this Peel Away 6 stuff sounds like a dream! I have a vintage rocker that my boyfriend's grandmother painted a hideous beige (including the rockers...) and I can't wait to have it brought back to original condition. Any advice on how to do this would be much appreciated. How long do I leave the stuff on? How hard do I rub? And what about after the paint is removed, do I need to coat is with something? Thanks for any advice!

Put it on, let it sit a number of hours (directions on the tub, maybe 12?) and scrape off the paint. Most likely you'll need to do a few applications of the stripper and you will go through a lot of dirty rags.
Use Penetrol after.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
