1962?
I thought he started designing for HM earlier?
I have an armshell with an original Girard Harlekin pattern upholstery. The cover is from before the time they started with the plastic piping to the edges. The back of the shell is also painted a neutral grey color like most early upholstered chairs were (or black in some cases)...

more than likely you are correct
He was doing designs for the company as early as 1955 but they started to use vinyl and fabric and become more commercialized with the shell chairs in late 61 after 62 they were the most popular cause they were going to airports, hospitals, bus stations, Universities,High Schools,
growing up in the 50s and 60s I remember them well, first the Hard shells in yellow and Grey at the Temple were we went, in the late 50s, and then
the Girard Hop sack and Vinyl although the 60s up until i finished college in 1973.
I really never saw much of them when i moved to Houston in the 70s cause all the international designs like mies,Panton,Planter, and Florence Knoll, were in all the offices i worked in.
