Hello,
I can buy a Wassily chair from a local pawnshop, but I can not see if this is a original or knock off. How can I recognize? Thanks! Linda

Thanks, but...
Thanks! Nice website!
But I know it is not a Knoll, because I am familiar with the Knoll signature. But how can I recognize for example a Stendig
or a knock off.... There is no sign on the chair.

The older knoll versions DO...
The older knoll versions DO NOT have the signature . This chair could be one of those old versions or not ?
Just post some more pics .

Thonet | Gavina | Knoll
Thonet (1925). Nickelled structure.
Gavina (1962-1968)
Knoll (1968-today). Knoll edition stamped.

Hi Mark,
I found that on the knoll's website.
"Marcel Breuer's signature and the KnollStudio logo are stamped into the base of each chair".
It can be the early production wasn't ?

Leather!
It seems obvious but is many times overlooked. I have seen a dozen replica chairs with thin leather or even imitation leather. All of the originals that i have seen have had thick high quality leather Knoll calls the leather they use "Belting Leather". Quality leather is not an indicator of authenticity but the lack of it can be a strong indicator of a replica.

Knoll Gavina Wassily Chairs?
I just purchased 6 of the Wassily chairs. Each of them has a sticker on the back bar that reads "Gavina Model Made in Italy" and a sticker on the bottom of the seat that reads "Knoll International 745 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10022"
The seller thought they were from 1960 but based on what I have read if these were made by Knoll it would not have been until 1968 when Knoll acquired Gavina. Is this correct?

Hi
Gavina was the manufacturer of these chairs at the time. So regardless of whether or not Knoll "owned" Gavina or was just importing and distributing the chair, the chair would still have a Gavina label. Knoll could have distributed the chair prior to 1968.

In looking closer, the Knoll...
In looking closer, the Knoll sticker is stamped "1977" on each of the chairs. Hope this helps someone.

look at the end of the tubes
besides the quality of the leather (old original versions are actually oiled heavy canvas like the ones used in convertible tops for cars), the quality of the chrome steel tubes should also be looked at closely. the ends of the steel tubes should be flat welded polished steel to match the chrome and not snap on chrome/metal or chrome/plastic end caps. this applies to all accepted authorized versions of the breuer chairs like the wassily and cesca. also run your finger along the inside curves where the steel bends into a perfect radius. it should feel smooth with no marks or traces of how the tube was bent. some say that this should be perfectly round too where it bends but there are old authentic chairs from the period made by standard mobel and thonet where the tube frame slightly flattens at the curves. check the dimensions too and compare it with documented versions that is out there (possibly in mm or cm).

Assembly quality is key, similar to what's stated above. I've always heard that any visible hardware is an immediate clue that it's not authentic.
