Just wondering how my fellow DA'ers handle the holidays.I have hosted small gatherings in the past,no larger than 10 people, and was a nervous wreck the entire time.Wondering who's going to spill a drink on my newly upholstered Womb chair, leave a wet glass(ring) on my teak breakfront,or who will start to lean backward, tilt and damage my precious tulip chairs.Sad,but true; nobody cares for our things the way we do,yet I hate to have to police my parties.Thoughts?

Simple,
If things mean more than people, don't have parties.

It's true, what Olive says. I used to freak all the time. But now, I just let it go. My answer for the drink rings was to get things that can take it..... an extremely worn Knoll wooden T - Angle table .... a saarinen tulip (laminate).
Are you in cold weather???? My guests tend to hang outside a lot anyway - because several of them smoke. If you add a grill and some music to your outdoor area, people tend to follow suit.
But above all, please spend your time enjoying their company first and foremost.

Yeah that's the spirit
In the past I used to worry about my stuff, but I gave it up for sanity's sake. My friends and loved ones are far more important than a chair. Once I had my priorities straight, it was easy.
I don't host all that many parties cuz neither the hubs or I can stand the chaos, but when we do we invite everyone. Kids, dogs, messy people etc. and just let whatever happens happen.

Friends and family are certainly of more value than things.I have had many a BBQ,and outside, the stress levels drop.

Another option, temporary remove precious items to another room or location. While lots can go wrong with a crowd, very little if anything ever happens. Usually the worse is a spilt drink or dirt on the carpet.

Party furniture
I keep a storeroom full of French Provencial furniture just for parties. I don't care if it gets destroyed. I think Whitespike does the same.

It aint a party till....
Its not a party until something gets broken, whether its your uncle doing the running man and landing on a table or your great aunt passing out in the prized chair and breaking the back of after a few to many sherries. Put the really valuable stuff out the way and have fun, even if it is worth a fortune its meant to be used but maybe not abused!

Kids and olds alike are welcome around mine
I put out more than my fair share of coasters, but other than that, it's a free for all

I think
I think the thing above all to remember is that while we have spent time collecting these lovely things and cherishing them -- before we owned them someone else did. They used them everyday; they had children; they had parties and friends and family over. It is furniture and it is meant to be used. Most damage is reversible and most furniture isn't one of a kind -- your friends and family are.

Seems your home
would be empty if you put away the valuables.
I do a few things.
One fabric covered chair goes in the guest room where coats are
tossed. I make room in the entry closet for the Prada people. The drunk
that passes out on the coats is always trouble. Car keys are found and hidden.
Cork and leather.
I made over-sized coasters out of cork tiles and leather scraps.
10 inch. I got the idea from Alberta boot Co. They stamp out coasters from
their scraps and toss a handful in the boot box at the counter. I have a big
oval one on the coffee table from a chair covering project.
Red wine is the enemy. Everyone brings red wine!
I hate to do it but the wool rug comes up. Spare flor tiles from the studio go
down. Easy to clean.
I don't use wine glasses. I've collected the Eva Zeisel federal glasses for years.
The lo-balls. Nice shape, heavy bottom. I don't like plastic. Fine for wine as
well as cocktails. (still cheap on e-bay) My limit years ago was 4 per glass
including shipping...i must have close to a hundred.
When i lived in the city, our annual party was the sunday before x-mas
at sundown. 150-200 people. Good time for a party. Most are still working
the next day, those with kids came early. The kooks that stayed late were
a blast and just a drunken dozen...we even had fun.
The only rule after i recovered the pool table myself, (that was a bitch)
was no more dancing on it!
The big parties are over now that we moved. I just don't trust the driving.
Smaller parties but same tricks. Hide keys and have a stack of blankets.
Turns into a slumber party. And added a nice early brunch to the planning.
We always had at least 25 for thanksgiving and a Super-bowl party...
What was i thinkin'!?
Elder parents have changed our priorities these days.
I just take the party to their homes.
