Briefly watched one of the designer makeover TV shows the other day, a patio makeover, that featured a Schultz petal table all fancied up with paint, surrounded by some Bertoia chairs. The owners requested that these be removed so the makeover people could install something with a Tuscan look, or somesuch.
re-upholstery of Wegner chair
Hi,
it's my first time here and I have been reading this thread because the title "Hideous upholstery on modern pieces" caught my attention. Besides all weird and painful and funny examples shown so far, my question to all is simple and probably quite naif for experienced collectors.
I have bought online (danish auction) a couple of CH30 chairs by H.Wegner. The seat is upholstered in fabric, kind of blue wool, but one is damaged so I guess I will have to re-upholster them both. Therefore I have been thinking what is the best way to proceed: should I look for vintage, original and scandinavian fabric, which can be found again online etc?
Or look for a similar fabric, suitable for color and alikness, and regardless of the origin?
In other terms, would you put first origin (country, style), or years of production (and therefore belonging to the same "moment" of the chairs), or alikness?
Or I should simply choose what suits me more, regardless anything else. And then land on maybe a striped, fancy Paul Smith 😉 ? seriously, what would YOU do? Thank you!

Keep it
in the style of the chair. If you chose laura ashley floral chintz then that would ruin the look.
that said a fabric by Marimekko could add it's own to the chair.
I have in the past used very good quality leathers in dark brown or black.
Byron is a good fabric by gabriel which looks similar to the original 1950s. linked below
The only issue is that you need to upholster the seat correctly. By that I mean that when you look at the seat and you can't work out how it's fitted to the frame you proceed with care.
The seat has internal screws which fit the seat half way through the upholstery process. I have seen many chair where the seat has been broken out due to poor knowledge.
Good luck and happy hunting
