I'd guess that these Frankenstein sideboards
result when sellers happen upon examples that are damaged beyond simple repair. Solution? Colorful new drawer fronts, that needn't match.

Take your mind out of the vice
Oh dear, Oh dear. How pathetic. Try and broaden your outlook a little and appreciate that design appreciation is in the eye of the beholder... or, more importantly, purchaser!! It may not have occurred to you that these items may actually sell, so carry on being self-righteous and criticise away for all you're worth, but the jokes probably on you, because smarter people out there may just be shrewdly tapping into a gap in the market.

It would seem that contempt4n...
It would seem that contempt4narrowminds is a seller of these unfortunate victims of restyling.
Sure, design appreciation, or whatever you said is in the eye of the purchaser. That's not a shocking fact. They bought it. Appreciating something doesn't make it good.
The idea that design is only subjective is silly, however. There is good and bad design. People like to do this to music too. It's fun for people to think of anything that is for entertainment or enjoyment, a luxury you'd say, as a personal thing whose merit is only measured by the one who enjoys it.
People say this about art too. But the fact is, while these goods are widely enjoyed by the general public, there are professionals in these fields with the education and experience to have an educated opinion.
I am perfectly at peace knowing that I do not have an educated opinion on airplane design. I guess I would know when I think one LOOKS cool to me, but that is a very shallow part of the equation of what makes a plane "good.". Many things are involved in decided whether or not an airplane is "good." I suppose I would need to know a little history on airplanes, I would need to know about how they are constructed and how they function, among many things.
Purchasing something doesn't give you the ability to label something's design quality. If anything it clouds it with bias.
The fact is, these pieces are adorned with coverings and finishes that are inappropriate to their design. Fussy fabrics on clean lined modernist furniture. Paint hiding the beauty of the natural materials being used. The use of so many colored panels that makes a simple design look too busy.
This is bad. Some things actually aren't opinions. I think most any professional designer would agree. The truth is in numbers.
Why not compare a Kia to a BMW because you like the color and shape. I'm sure a mechanic could tell you a little about their differences under the hood.

the invocation of "open-mindedness"
on the internet is almost always trolling, I think.....it's not "closed-minded" to have tastes; nor is it "open-minded" to believe that what sells is what's good.
dear expresser of contempt: I expect to discover many new pleasures in my life; disfigured "fun" "funky" versions of modern furniture are not likely to be one of them.
modern design had a strong optimistic pedagogical impulse; selling spoiled modern items as "funky" "fun" pieces abandons that impulse and becomes just another cynical con-the-suckers routine.
sure, you're "giving people what they want": but I maintain that the people who want said stuff don't know or care much about design, and if they later become people who do, their desires will change.

paul smith
the Paul Smith company do it themselves to use in displays and photo shoots. An employee must sell it on after via ebay, I like Paul Smith fabric but think it looks wrong on retro furniture
as for the painted sideboards - i'm sure at some point in the future some poor sod will have the sandpaper out!
we're currently undergoing the misery of de-"shabby chic" ing a Stag C Range tallboy!!

Like selling your grandmother...
Like selling your grandmother to a pimp.
At least its only veneered chipboard thats being wrecked, imagine if they got hold of some rosewood or something solid, theyu'd have to go all out with silver paint and an Elvis stencil or something.
No no they'd put MADE IN DENMARK on the front, in comic sans.

Not
sure what they have to do with Pantone, more in the Bauhaus tradition of Josef Albers?
