Hi, does anyone on here recognise this mark on the underside of an Eames shell armchair in lemon yellow with small shocks on a nickel h base please......the obvious thing that springs to mind is Zenith plastics? any help would be appreciated.
thank you

Yes
I have a chair marked in the exact same manner. The oddly shaped letter or symbol in the center of the three dots remains a mystery to me.
But if the chair had just the three dots -- with no other markings-- it would make it a typical "third generation" Zenith chair, circa. 1954-ish to early 1957-ish by most accounts.
I would also be interested if anyone has any leads on this rather strange marking.
Good luck with your search.
Thanks for getting back to...
Thanks for getting back to me Eameshead......yes bit of a mystery, there's good provanence behind the chair been in architects house since early sixties I believe, came with some other Eames and Bertoia pieces.
Here in the Uk, people panic when it doesnt have a Herman Miller mark or label....although in retrospect the majority of shells for sale in the uk are marriages ie not so old shells with new bases attached etc.
regards Gary
Hi, the chair was part of...
Hi, the chair was part of the furnishings belonging to a deceased architect in Cadogan Square London. Came out of a lovely mews property which was being put up for sale, along with the Eames chair was anice early black dkr with lovely olive green/grey bikini pads, a set of six Bertoia dining chairs, a black bertoia diamond chair with seat pad, two bertoia bar stools, a Hans Wegner cane backed daybed for getama (early version) a Poul Kjaerholm PK61 slate coffee table, two PK71 small tables (white Plastic tops)fantastic Gerald Ambravitch best n lloyd cantilever light, Arne Jacobsen cutlery for aj michelsen the list goes on really, lots of old architectural drawings, magazines books etc....just going through it all now in fact......
So back to the chair, its a lovely lemon yellow colour (I have an early rope edge the same colour)all original hardware etc...but like I said earlier, when you try and seel something like this ...all the so called experts cry fake if it doesnt have a Herman Miller sticker or impressed mark....when really all theyre buying off of ebay and the like, are late shells in bright colours either polished, painted and filled, or had covers taken off them placed on new Chinese bases...makes me cross

3 dots and no other markings...
Thanks Gary,
The 3 dots in a small triangular pattern (with no other markings present) has been noted on ebay many times, and is by now widely accepted as Herman Miller third (or last) generation Zenith production.
I have several Herman Miller Eames shells with the three dot marking.
The symbol in the center of the three dots is also widely accepted as Herman Miller, but quite a bit less common.
Many Eames shells have no markings whatsoever. In fact, that IS the way one can tell that they are "correct", and of a pre 1960's vintage. But I know what you mean about people needing labels...
(If there are no marks or labels, and no raised logo or letters, you can still look for other characteristics to verify a Herman Miller shell. There are unmarked shells with both large and small shock mounts, rope and non rope edge, x base and h base with different shock mount size combos etc. All can help to identify an Eames chair. Lastly there is simply the look and proportions of the chair shell.
But rest assured, what you have is an authentic Eames shell. And with a marking that will no doubt be identified at some date in the not too distant future. Hopefully.
The chair that i have with the same marking as yours is the bright acid yellow.
Acid Yellow
I called it "acid yellow" so as not to confuse it with the warmer yellow shells that are also quite bright. This is a very intense and bright yellow that is to the cool or greenish side of yellow, rather than the orange side.
You know, ACIDY! The color is rather "screaming".
They are not uncommon. I am sure you have seen em around in your vast experience Woody.... (But not to be confused with those lime green "chartreuse" side chairs though)
