I looked through a lot of past threads on this subject, but I didn't find anything about this type of label. I might have the opportunity to acquire an Eames 670/671 lounger. The lounger is in good to great condition but is disassembled at this time. When the person that owns the lounger was showing it to me they held up what appeared to be the seat of the 670 lounge chair and this label was attached. This label is the only identification mark on the 670/671 set. Most the Herman Miller labels that I have seen say Zeeland, Michigan and this labels says Los Angeles 66, Calif. Can any of you guys & gals tell me what generation Eames lounger this might be and the corresponding years that it might of been produced. Unfortunately, the only picture I took of the lounger was of the this label. The 670/671 lounger was in a pile so I didn't even think to pull it apart and take more pictures.
Thanks a head of time for any responses.....

Twice in one night I can be very slightly helpful with American made pieces, about which I know next to nothing.
According to Wikipedia that address would conform to the pre July 1, 1963 standard for writing addresses, both with regards to the two digit zip code, and the long state abbreviation:
Quote:
By the early 1960s a more organized system was needed, and on July 1, 1963, non-mandatory five-digit ZIP codes were introduced nationwide. Simultaneously, along with the introduction of the ZIP code, two-letter state abbreviations were introduced, which are generally written with both letters capitalized.
And more: Herman Miller incorporated in 1960, becoming Herman Miller, Inc.
See here:

So that tag would fit a window between 1960 and 1963. And due to the possibility of having an inventory of tags on hand, which would want to be exhausted before printed new, slightly revised ones one would probably err later with both dates, but not earlier.
leif ericson,
Dear Lord my man, you are a inexhaustible fountain of knowledge. You just talk me a lesson, pay close attention to the details. Years ago I read something about July 1, 1963 & zip codes, but obviously it didn't stick with me. I'm going to put this info into my long term memory this time around.
Thanks for helping me once again & Happy Holidays

Leif,
Unless I see the white patent number label, or confirm the use of duck feathers in the pads, I am pretty limited on the 670 / 671 Lounge and Ottoman.
(Now if we are talking fiberglass shells and the evolution of the various bases, thats another story!)
I must defer once again to Kin, who eats these chairs for breakfast.
Your date window is much more specific than my "1971 or earlier line in the sand" - based solely on duck feathers.
FWIW, I have only ever seen this cloth tag affixed to the cushion inserts, not glued to the undersides of seat or otto panels. Like EH, I've also assumed that the down/feather/foam inserts went only with the pre-'71 sets with the oval cushion hooks, though I think there may have been a period of overlap. That said, I haven't closely examined so many early examples...
tktoo: I know next to nothing about these chairs. Really. But I think you are saying that this tag should not be affixed to the veneer panel. And I think you might be suggesting the corollary to that someone other than the factory placed it there? This would be quite interesting!
Or am I reading to much into your statement?
I can't say for certain either way, Leif. It may well have been done early on, but I don't recall ever seeing that tag on the shells.
Edit: Found this nifty run-down on teakhound's blog from '09 showing "law label" mounted to seat panel INSIDE on a series II set!

Thanks everyone for your help with this chair. I talked to the person that has this chair today and they said that the labels are on the outside bottom of the shell on the 670 lounger & 671 ottoman. This person had so much stuff in their house that I was looking at, that my brain went on overload and I couldn't even remember which side that label was on when I took the picture. The person with the chair is going to email me some pictures of the cushion hooks and the screws on the underside of the armrest, as well as some other shots that I will post as soon as I get them.
Thanks again everybody & Happy Holidays

Hello everyone,
The person that owns the Herman Miller 670/671 lounger emailed me with some pictures and information about the chair & ottoman. They said that the armrests have 2 screws and the domes of silence
have a Pat. #2030649. They also mentioned that all the rosewood panels have the number 401
stamped into them.
Thanks again for all your responses.....
