Herman Miller Shell Chair base: raise or lower?

Greetings. Recently i have been collecting shell chairs for my office. I have two bases and one shell thus far. One base is with wheels and the other not.
Take a look:

From what I've read these chairs raise and lower by spinning the chair.
Well I've spun and spun to no avail. Either both bases are broken ( which seems unlikely) or I am missing something completely.
Help, comments, anything welcome.

I have
the same chair in grey, with wheels, and I sure as heck don't think it raises, lowers.

The screw-raised version, which I've only seen on the four-star universal base (what you have is the "contract base") has a very visible segmented center post (screw threads visible). Your base is swivel-only.
