Hello. I just purchased a Herman Miller H Base armchair. The shell is in amazing shape - it actually has one of those vinyl covers.
The chair does not have the embossed logo, but instead has a round silver medallion like sticker. The sticker reads "Designed by Charles Eames - Herman Miller Zeeland Mich." There is also the white square chart sticker.
Can someone give me any information on this? I see the square sticker has been brought up many times, but I can't find any information on the medallion sticker.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you. I will post pictures if this is more helpful.
sticker
The round metal medallions were used for many years in one form or another. White at first then changed to black later on. Also I have some that are tan. Some of them read like yours others just say have the H and herman Miller writen on them. They were also used for George Nelson. They are common but very cool. I hope this helps.
Lol
Deja Vu. This thread has happened before almost verbatim. Don't be worried about the lack of the embossed "M" Herman Miller logo. HM contracted out to various plastics manufacturers to make the shells. Some of the earlier manufacturers didnt emboss the M, some only the M and later both the M and the words Herman Miller.
Herman Miller has no exact dates, but they generalize 1950-53ish not all of the shells were marked. 1953-56ish the M logo, 1957+ both logo & name.
The double overlapping triangles is the makers-mark of the subcontractor: Summit Plastics of Kalamazoo, MI. (Two mountains next to each other)
Yes, but
Yes, that is the Herman Miller logo. But there are often secondary marks from the subcontractors. The one's I've seen are a pair of flames interlocked (unknown), two overlapped triangles (Summit) , an S in a circle (also Summit), a C with a star inside of it (Cincinatti Milicron).
The M logo is usually near and parallel to the front lip of the chair. The secondary marks usually fall above that and closer to the shockmounts.
I know what you mean...
But regardless of the secondary marks, I have seen shells with just the large "H" (or "M") embossed, without the words "HERMAN MILLER" underneath. The embossment can be kind of faint / shallow, so that's why I mentioned that it may be difficult to see without the "HERMAN MILLER" accompanying it.
Some of the later shells even have the larger H with the circle around it. Like the medallion tag, except it is embossed.
thank you.....
but the embossed triangles (maybe v's) are definitely not the H & M together.... or even anything like it. I will take a picture when i get home from work this evening and post so you can see it. the triangles are found between the shock mounts, pretty much in the middle. i have seen the herman miller logo closer to the lip of the seat (almost exactly where my medallion sticker is).
there is a the white chart sticker too.... i'm just wondering if i got a good deal on the chair and hoping i didn't get scammed. 🙂
thanks to all!!
