Just won two of these Bill Stumpf lamps, made in the (I think) early 1980's) and can be seen on page 95 of the Herman Miller Office book from Schiffer Books.
I had one already (next to computer monitor) and now have one in my living room.
The second one I won's going upstairs next to my bed.
Super high quality lamp.
It's a cinch that the lamp existed before Devo!
I'm not the biggest post-modern fan, but these lamps are super high quality, heavy metal bases and sturdy burgandy and grey plastic shades.
They give off good light, and they ARE genuine Herman Miller.
In the 1000 Lights 1960-present book by Taschen, it's featured on page 333. Designed by Bill Stumpf in 1984, it was called "Ethospace Task Light" and was designed to go with the Ethospace office furniture system.
"It's a cinch that the lamp...
"It's a cinch that the lamp existed before Devo!"
Nope. The whip it video is from 1980, so Devo's use of that design preceded Bill Stumpf's by at least 4 years. Devo appropriated it too of course, but anyway, Devo popularized it long before this lamp was made. Just fyi.
Well......
I respectfully disagree.
If you can say that that about this lamp, then you can say the same thing about that Starck Gun Lamp, and a whole slew of other things. And don't get me started on that pink Sottsass vase again.
The lamp reflects its time. It is a good design. Sure, the Devo reference is amusing, but ignoring that, it is a very good design.
Besides, if Devo is cool, then though transitive property, this lamp is cool too.
Crack that whip!
