Hello! I'm new around here and in desperate need of design guidance...I just moved to my first home, a 2 BR 2 1/2 Bath condo in Miami. After waiting for 16 weeks, I finally received my beloved furniture. Now I just need to add some color and personality to the apt, especially the living and dining area.

The whole apt has bamboo floors and off-white walls.
For the dining room I have Russian Red Cab Chairs and LC12 table (polished chrome and crystal), and for the living room a black 3-seater LC3, 2 ivory armchairs LC3, black LC4, LC10 (square, glass, and black), and black Arco lamp.
I don't have too much artwork, a couple of serigraphies by Venezuelan artist Alejandro Otero.
Please help me choose a couple of area rugs, I'm willing to spend a $1000 between the two. I hope this is enough for some great suggestions! Thanks!

Hi Allyta,
You've got some really stark high contrast going on with your space and furnishings. If I were you, I'd focus my rug design on softening the edges a bit. Maybe a more traditional eastern carpet, in the more tribal patterns like an Afshari, link below. Or if you must stay modernist... Check out rugs by Nani Marquina, Angela Adams or Javier Mariscal. These will be at the top of your price range and higher. You can also try www.roomandboard.com and www.homedecorators.com for less expensive rugs. There are also carpet tiles from www.florcatalog.com. Good luck

Thanks for the rug suggestions!
Sassa: some really cool carpets. I'll look around the Design District to see if I find something similiar! Awesome designers by the way!
Olive: should I stick w/ reds to compliment the chairs? Or look for something lighter, maybe more yellow?
Also on another note, should the chairs sit entirely on the rug, or should I leave a thin line between the furniture and the rug?

Greyed and flattened color
I'd stay with red/orange/yellow but go with less saturated tones. Think cinnabar, brick and ochre rather than the full on hues. The look will be softer and more elegant, but still mid-cent mod. As for rugs, my opinion has always been either all legs on the rug or all legs off. It depeneds on how big the room is and if you are trying to define a seating area or soften the room. Bamboo floors are generally nice to look at so maybe a rug that just fits the furniture arrangement or one that is just in the center of the arrangement, that'll depend on the size of the room. If it's a big open room I'd get the rug big enough to fit all the furniture, if it's a small room I might just put a small one in the middle under the coffe table. But if the room is lpoud and echo-y I might still use a larger rug. Really all this depends on what you want out of the space. There aren't really any design rules beyond making a space work for the person who uses it.
