Hi,
I own what I think is a Harry Bertoia Bird Chair. The chair came in to my possession about 5 years ago from a relative on my wife's side of the family who was moving abroad. I don't know how long they had the chair for, but in terms of condition is looks very good. It has a chrome metal frame and base, black rubber shock mounts and has a purple fabric cover.
I'm wanting to sell the chair because it hasn't been sat in very much and having bought a new sofa I don't really have room for it any more.
The question I hoped people here might be able to help me with is establishing who the maker is. I know that Knoll produce the chair, but having checked my chair I cannot find a stamp or sticker on the base.
Is there anywhere else I can look or any other tell tale signs that is would have been made by Knoll? Has anyone other than Knoll ever produced the Bird Chair? I have scoured the web and can't find anyone selling this chair.
Any help or hints would be very gratefully received. I'll find a way to get some pictures uploaded and share them with you all.
Many thanks,
Andrew

Remove the pad...
Remove the pad and check the wires. I know that a lot of the Diamond Chair reproductions have the seat wires sandwiched between 2 wire rims (or whatever you want to call them). The seat wires are also beveled and and the edges smooth where they connect to the rim - unlike copies, in which the seat wires are flat at the edges. I am assuming that the bird chair would be similar in these ways. I will say that yours appears to be a more recent model, as the vintage Bird Chairs do not have flat chrome disks on either side of the shock mount. That's what little I can contribute. Hope it helps.
more information
Thanks everyone. I double checked and my chair has double edges around the frame except for at the front where it is a single bar on the edge.
I also managed to find a small green label on the inside of the fabric cover on the bottom at the front where it folds around under the front of the chair.
The label says Matricola 719. It then has boxes numbered 1 to 12 and 00 to 02. Numbers 6 and 01 have a line through them, perhaps suggesting this chair was made in June 2001?
Would any of this tally with this chair being a Knoll production?
All the best,
Andrew
It is Knoll
You can't really see the angle of the back to compare it with the side shot. It looks real and the Matricola tag confirms it.
I recently bought a Womb chair which has Knoll printed in the frame just under the arm rest. It also carries the Matricola sticker with 7 and 07 punched. Maybe Knoll didn't stamp the frames back in 01 but it certainly is a genuine piece.
Confirmation from Knoll
I thought I would just update anyone who was following this thread with news from Knoll.
Francesca from the UK office just emailed me to confirm that Knoll didn't start to stamp their name in to the frames of these chairs until 2003. As such my 2001 model wouldn't have had any stamp. Her view was that my chair is indeed a genuine Knoll production.
Thanks again to everyone who got involved and I hope this postscript from Knoll helps anyone who needs to establish authenticity for this kind of chair.
Best,
Andrew
