Hello,

I recently purchased a chair which I believed to be an original Papa Bear and was told it was the original upholstery.

A couple things have been discovered that lead me to believe it is a reproduction, or at the very least has been reupholstered.

The first is that it only has 7 buttons. 4 in a row along the top, 3 in a row underneath. It seems his chairs usually had 12.

The other thing is that the fabric has been stapled along the bottom, and cut pretty crudely. I have seen the underside of authentic examples and they usually have nails holding the fabric in.

I am unable to see a mark or sticker because the fabric covers the sides and bottom of the underside of the wood, the top part of the underside wood has no visible marks.

Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks.

Definitely been...
Definitely been re-upholstered.
You could remove the dust cover and see if it is marked. That would be the fastest way to authenticate it.

I did remove the dust cover...
I did remove the dust cover but can only see one of the four areas of wood on the underside because the new fabric covers the other three.

maybe re-staple closer to...
maybe re-staple closer to the edge and pull the staples so you can see.
You could also post some photos of the underside, various angles. Might help someone catch something wrong.
I current have a disassembled, authentic Papa Bear in my living room, so I can be very precise with details.

I am planning on returning...
I am planning on returning this to the owner, hopefully. So any specific information as to why you believe this is reupholstered or not original would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again!

The back of the chair, where...
The back of the chair, where the buttons are should be stitched into rectangles, with the buttons at the intersections.
The button pattern is wrong. The number is wrong.
Under the paws, the seam should land at the dead center.
Under the cushion you should be able to see the straps, not fabric.
There should be no cambric dust cover underneath
The stapled edges of the fabric underneath should be folded under so it form a clean edge.
There are also weird bulges and less than perfect lines all over this chair.

did you pay topdollar, may I ask?
I don't know what your intentions were with this acquisition.
Personally I would guess this is authentic but obviously recovered.

Send it my way
If you don't want it. I don't care if it was not reupholstered true to the original.

No, give it to me, I think
jdip already has a few. (haha)
The fabric looks like a synthetic in that first closeup of the arm. It's definitely a re-do. But the wood parts have an age-old patina to them, from the looks of it, so that's good.
