Anyone have suggestions on what fabric we should use to reupholster our our mid-century Flex-Steel chair? Current options under consideration are Knoll?s Classic Boucle (in Aegean) and Maharam?s Hallingdal colorway 130 (a heather grey). My husband is concerned that the boucle might give the chair (which has a slightly high back) a frumpy, Archie Bunker look. Complicating the matter ? the chair needs to look good with our Kroehler Avant couch (see pic) that we?re also recovering, but plan on keeping green (Maharam?s Hallingdal colorway 980). Help! This is way more complicated than we thought it would be.
PS- We love the original fabric on both pieces does anyone what fabric these things were covered in? The closest we've found is Hallingdal but it's not an exact match. The older fabric is a little scratchier and has a bit of a shine. Wondering if this type of fabric is still available.

hmmm.
Methinks that these lovely pieces are not quite ready for a re-do. They look quite acceptable as-is. But I might be wrong.
yup,

As much as I respect Aunt Mark's
opinion, I feel obliged to chime in.
I reupholstered a pair of this same Flex-Steel chair a couple of years. My customer chose a different Knoll fabric but I've also used a LOT of Knoll Classic Boucle and I love it! I have done four things in the past year in the Aegean color alone. I don't think it'll make your chair look a bit frumpy. The only thing that would give it that look would be if your upholsterer goes overboard on the padding. A lot of upholsterers do that with mid-century modern furniture; they are used to doing more conventional styles that call for a more overstuffed look. You really need to tone it down for MCM furniture.
The Knoll boucle has a great look, feels nice, and is easy to work with. I think it's an excellent choice for this chair and it'll work better with green than gray would. Green and teal will be colorful---but I like the combo!
As for the fabric on the sofa--it looks like it's probably an early acrylic or nylon. You mentioned that it looks shiny---is it sort of a sparkly shiny? Synthetic fibers have a subtle sparkle to them whereas wool fibers are very matte in appearance. You have to look closely to see the difference. If it's synthetic, Hallingdal will be a big, big step up. Hallingdal is gorgeous stuff. You can't go wrong with it.

They look like they don't need to be redone but...
Thanks for your advice on the boucle and the Hallingdal. We are definitely considering them and they are top contenders. Spanky do you remember what Knoll fabric your client chose for the Flexsteels? - Just curious.
As far as not needing to be redone...the green sofa has horrible pitting of the foam (like cellulite) all along the back rest. The yellow guy ...well you dont really want to look under that cushion it's all crusty and discolored and the whole thing smells like smoke. Trust us we have some great use from the green sofa at least.

The two I redid are in Knoll's
"Cross stitch", a smooth wool sateen with a tattersall check pattern. It's a very tailored look but thin, smooth fabrics are tricky to work with. They tend to show every little unevenness in the padding.
I thought the sofa looked like it had a touch of crunchy foam disease. It'll be great when it's redone!
