Howdy folks,

I just came to realize that the dressers we got from my in-laws several years ago may have some value. I never looked into it before because my wife thought they were ugly. We are getting ready to move and had one of them out for a yard sale. No takers not even the neighbours who we were going to give a good deal of $300 for the set to. Well I always thought they were special so I started researching. They are the 1953 Borge Morgensen 4 drawer teak dressers with teak legs retailed by Illums Bolighus. Here's where I run into a identity problem.....There is a label on the inside of one of them that says A. Ahlstrom Osakeyhtio Warkhaus. Aside from the Illums metal tag on the other dresser and the pencil markings matching the drawers to the dresser there are no other labels, stamps or markings anywhere.
Does anyone have any idea why the A. Ahlstrom Company of Finland would have made these dressers? There was a matching vanity in the set that was unfortunatly given away to my mother-in-law's friend. I would like to get an idea of the value of these pieces so I can make an offer and obtain the vanity to re-unite the set. Even though my wife thinks it's ugly, I want it.

spelling
I can't answer your question but it may help in your research to spell the name correctly: Børge Mogensen . It looks like it should have an "r" in the last name but there is none. (And the "g" isn't pronounced at all, if you need to say it out loud to anyone!)
I wonder if production was just farmed out to the Finnish firm? Just guessing.

Plywood Maker
Hi there.
At the risk of sounding a little obvious the liklyhood is that your dressers are not made in finland but merely the plywood that is used for the backing.
I have often come across furniture where the back is nicely adorned with the name of the maker of plywood and thus the seller is convinced it has been designed in finland and made there especially.
So double check the inside of the cabinet. On the base of the cabinet, on the back of doors and see it there is another mark.
As far as I am aware and have books for
Mogensen made furniture for
Fredericia stole fabrik, C M MAdsen, FDB, Erhard Rasmussen, P. Lauritzen & son, Søborg møbler and finally the only non danish
AB Karl Andersson & sons, Sweden

I've searched every square inch of these for a makers mark. Was there a certain time period or particular maker that built these without tags or marks or perhaps hid it in a strange spot? There is no indication that they ever had any type of label that may have fallen off.
Does it affect the value of the piece, or am I just wasting my time trying to figure it out?
