Hey all,
You may remember me mentioning that my parents bought me a Hans Wegner knock-off daybed for my graduation present. It is still not put together as I have yet to re-upholster it. My parents know nothing about mid-century modern design. They saw the daybed in a antique store where they live and thought I would like it. They didn't even know who Hans Wegner was. They just knew I wanted some type of mid-century modern daybed. They paid around $200 for the daybed, I believe.
Anyhoo, I keep meaning to post pics of the daybed to see if anyone knows who actually made it. I was on ebay today, and wonder of wonders, someone has one of these daybeds for auction. Only they are listing it as a Hans Wegener piece and not a knock-off. I'm positive that it is a knock-off. It's a decent piece of furniture but not anywhere as nicely-made as a Wegner one is, IMHO. It also has noticable differences including the number of screws in the side, the manner in which the back tilts up, etc.
The link to the ebay auction that has the same daybed I have is below. Can you all identify this piece please? And if it is indeed a knock-off, as I believe it is, the ebay seller needs to be informed that they are using false advertising.
Really?
I always thought it was desinged after the Wegner daybed. All the Wegner daybeds that I've ever seen always have three srews on the sides, not two like on this daybed, and the tops of the Wegner daybeds I've seen tilt up in a different fashion. Maybe this is a different version of the daybed that I've never seen, but I always just thought it was a knock-off. I'm not expert on Hans Wegner either.
I realize that. It's just...
I realize that. It's just that this is the only daybed I've ever seen like the one I own. It just doesn't seem as nice s the Hans Wegner daybeds that I have seen...noty that I've seen many. Perhaps, one of his not made in large quantities...an early model? The back part of it gets on my nerves a bit where the wood on the back is a darker shade then the wood around the base. Mine is the same.
I found the same...
I found the same images...
A google search 'Hans Wegner daybed' brought up many
examples. I stopped after a dozen...
One solid side piece.
And visually makes more sense.
I still like yours. And also understand any hesitation to put
too much money into it. (if the side shows prominent and
still bugs you, i suppose it could be masked off, stripped
and stained to match).
If it is well made, it is worth the effort.
Such a shame so many pieces were copied over the years.
I stopped in an estate sale last weekend. A Noguchi table
surrounded by glassy brassy italian junk. It was junk also...

Thanks for all the help. I...
Thanks for all the help. I was certain it wasn't a Hans Wegner piece. It's not that nice, but still a nice sofa. Too bad no one knows who makes it though.
I'm not planning on making any cosmetic changes to it except for the upholstery. Yes, the side bug me a bit, but I've positioned it in such a way that you won't notice.
