that's obviously painted. I saw that chair unpainted at an online preview at a local auction and the wood was beautiful. My suggestion if it was cheap enough is strip the shit out of it and bring back it's true beauty!

I have seen them in white aswell all though never close up, they did make a white formica topped table so its possible they made them in white too, I would assume if they made a painted version they would have used beech (or similar) and not an exotic wood.
