Good people,

I have a set of 6 magnificent and original Wegner chairs from the 1950's and have considered selling them locally in NYC. I love theses chairs very much and have treasured them for the last three years but since I have a 5-month old daughter and getting more active and messier by the minute, have thought of selling them.
These chairs belong in a well-kept,baby-free home for they represent, to me, the best in post-modern furniture design. These are very sturdy and well-mainteined chairs and my question to you experts out there is: how much are they worth? You can see pictures on my home page :

Please let me know what you think.

with thanks,

Magdalena

Hi Magdelena,
It is not obvious from your pictures which of the three cabinet makers that have produced the CH30 has produced your particular set. Some have been produced by Carl Hansen, some by Lars Christian Larsen and finally by JL Moller. The were designed in 1952 and most of them have a paper label with the manufacturer on it. It might also be burned in the wood. In any case, a set of six in good condition is worth 3.600 US$ (retail)
Good luck with the sale!

Sorry...
I did recognize the chairs right away so I did not pay attention to the pictures of the labels...The clearly are produced by Lars Christian Larsen.
Sorry for that

what can she get
the post seems to ask not for the retail value, but for what the owner can sell them for. and my guess is that a fair auction estimate for the 6 should be around $1200 to $1500 U.S. Koen's retail price of $3000+ is probably accurate at high-end places in large cities.
i may be wrong, but these are very common chairs without significant collector value. if you can find someone willing to pay you anywhere above $1500 for 'em, you should seriously consider the offer. (and remember that auctionhouses take a 15-20% cut from both the seller & the buyer).

A friend of mine...
mentioned recently that he had seen a set of 6 CH29 chairs in London for just over 4.000 $US. Only four of them had the original leather seats. I figured that New york prices are probably slightly less than London prices, but I also tried to factor in the simple fact that the CH29 is a better design than the CH30, which makes the first one more attractive. I mentioned "retail" because it is up to the seller to decide on how to sell it and who is going to make the effort of exposing and selling it. Over and above the fact that there are differences between consignation and actual bying, mark-ups also seem to be quite different according to location. Retail pricing gives a better indication of what the end user is willing to pay.
Again Magdalena good luck with the sale!

Thanks for your input!
I knew I would get meaningful thoughts on the chairs issue. Thanls Koen!
And although YCL thinks these chairs are not great collection assets I still love the look and what they represent in the mod world. I will keep you guys posted as to how I did with the sale.
with regards,

DONT SELL!
Hi Magdalena,
Why on earth sell the chairs as the only result may be that you will regret it.
Keep them and let your daughter inherit when the time comes!
Personally we have 3 yr old twins and in my modest collection i have
Wegners, The little steel chair
Wegners, The chair, 1st edition with cane seat
Wegner, RY100 cabinet in light oak
Jacobsen, Series 7 with arms in fabric.
My point is that these chairs, and especially the CH30s that you have stand up incredibly well to everyday use.
Should they get scuffed they can be restored.
The chairs will only get better with age and thus appreciated more by you and once your daughter understands that "mommy gets sad when I mess" she will forget all about the chairs!
As for the issue of value etc.
The cost to purchase a set for resale ei not from a shop direct lies around the 1500 - 2000 US$ for a set of 6, but that is always depending on condition.
As for your various labels issue.
Lars Christian Larsen & son where a very skilled workshop that were used by Moller, Carl Hansen, Andreas Tuck when their own workshops could not keep up with demand.
Their skill is in no way lesser that that of Carl Hansen, in fact I would risk to say that as they were commissioned to work for so many of the top names their skill was seen as higher.
And to azuredchicken, CH30 NEVER came with arms!
So dont worry about some baby food and marks cause one day you may spill your red wine and laugh.

Wegner chairs are incredibly well-made
Simon, thanks for your thoughts! I like how you present your point of view and you are right, it's totally doable to tresure these chiars while bringing up children. You said: " the CH30s that you have stand up incredibly well to everyday use." well, I couln't agree more since I had several situation with these chairs where I thought their end was near but amazingly have prevailed it all! For instance, during a party at my house one "big-boned" guest was sitting horribly on the chair....all the weight of his flabbyness was rested mercylessly and carelessly on the backof the 50-year-old chair!!
see it for yourself: http://homepage.mac.com/thelevys1/PhotoAlbum16.html !!! Needles to say hat vision sobered me up right away and held my breath for the rest of the party ! so I agree, these chairs are suitable for every day use and kids (or design-ignorant people ) pose no threat to their legacy.
I will seriously consider keeping the chiar. I'll guess I'll see how interactive my daughter is towards my beloved mid-century pieces and part from there.

Good choice
Hi Magdalene,
Glad you are deciding to keep the chairs.
They are great and will stand up to, even the "big chaps" sitting on them awkwardly!
For a quide price see the attached link for a set from Designs of denmark

So....
I was not too far off after all! This being said, I would also keep them....just to enjoy. I would be the last one to predict that they will increase in value or even keep that value. The Retro-modern wave might die out as fast as it came, but it is just a very nice chair.
