The movers packed the chair in two parts (why?) and now I can't get the base re-attached to the frame. I can start to thread it in but it stops and I don't want to force it. This is the five swivel-caster base and (if it matters) there's a Herman Miller sticker on the bottom of the chair that says it was made in August, 1982, so not sure if a 30 year-old model works the same way it does today.
Any assistance or advice gratefully appreciated.

do you have hard time fitting the base bracket underneath
the bottom of the seat between the 2 rails?
if so, i think you would need to find a way to "stretch" or "expand" the 2 rails wide enough that you can slip the base mounting part underneath.
i also have a chair that has been diassembled and i still did not get around to find a way to "stretch" the rails apart properly.
they use a hydraulic machine at the vitra factory to "stretch" the frame!
maybe others can chime in.

Assembly clamp
I have used TLC Quick Grip hand clamps (I use 2) that are able to configure to clamp inwards or outwards. Makes it easy to align the EAG tilt stirrup to the sidemembers
