picasso
not liking their style is fair enough, everyone has their own idea of taste and opinions on what is aesthetically pleasing, take picasso for instance, absolute genius that people are split right down the middle about,
however, appreciating that certain peoples work is of a high quality whether it is not to everyones taste or not should be the middle ground in this debate, surely?

MadHaus...thank you for a reasoned argument this time round...Im not really dissing them, the way I see it I am happy for them to exist and commend them for what they have done but as a collector they hold no interest for me. To be honest while I am no fan of theirs I wanted to spark a bit of debate while at the same time seeing if I am the only one who doesnt get excited about eames.

To killian
Understood, and to be honest I have become the same way. I do own an Eames 670 and have alot of passion for mainly that one design, even though its popular.
But your very right to say that many Eames designs are not an unusual piece anymore, nor has it ever been, except when they where first created.
When I see a shell chair, I dont really get excited either, same goes for many other pieces by them, I just say "Oh look, an Eames chair" But im not about to whip out the cash and pick it up.
but going back to the start of this who thread.
Awesome job! on picking up the freebieeee id do that any day.

Hi Graeme,
Im afraid Im going to have to argue the " high quality" point with you vis a vis Eames...is their stuff high quality ?
I would certainly see their designs as forward thinking and embracing technology but from the point of view of quality and craftsmanship I dont think they were even trying to achieve that. The way I see the Eames designs was that they were trying to produce nice things at low cost by making tonnes of it....which IMO never goes hand in hand with real genuine crafted quality as I undersatnd it.

personally...
personally I love their designs,as a graphic designer myself I tip my hat to their designs.quality is something I can't really comment on as I have only ever owned an early EA105 Aluminium group chair...and I have to say I couldn't fault the quality

You do bring up an...
You do bring up an interesting point.
So, is Eames furniture the beginning of design, for many of us? As in your first introduction to a known designer? I know for me they were into the collectable aspect. I was all over the place, I think I started with kitsch and moved on the high-end pieces. Thank goodness. But not knowing anything about design it's taken years of searching, seeking, reading..etc. to understand design and I'm still learning.
I now tend to favor Danish designers, but still have my black Eames shell. Funny, I came across it in a very similar way. So, every time I look at it I am reminded but I have moved on, onto other designers. There are so many great designers out there just think for me; I see the Eames as the beginning.

Maybe for the American citizens amongst the forum members, but probably not for the Europeans
